Clara Reeve (1729–1807) was an English writer. Reeve began publishing in the 1770s, culminating in THE OLD ENGLISH BARON in 1777. Reeve wrote the work as an homage to (or in imitation of) Horace Walpole's Gothic Classic THE CASTLE OF OTRANTO. She died in 1807, largely forgotten.

THE OLD ENGLISH BARON is an influential Gothic Romance. Set in medieval England, the story follows the life of Sir Philip Harclay, who returns from a journey abroad to find that the estate and titles of his friend Lord Lovel are in the hands of a pretender. Harclay must battle against evil and supernatural forces to set things aright.
