Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Bubbles seems to excel at everything. She's a good student, the teacher's pet, and the most popular student in the class; all of which drives Opal's friend Daphne crazy. Finally, though, Daphne and Opal discover Bubble's Achilles' heel: She can't dance. To puncture her reputation, the pair plot to make this goody-goody part of the class presentation chorus line. As usual, this Holly Hobbie casts a bright light on real problems and emotions that every child experiences.
Publishers Weekly
Readers may well remember the heroine of Charming Opal, the winning cousin of Toot & Puddle's Puddle. Well, there's a new student in Opal's class, Bubbles, and "for some reason, the new pupil latched onto Opal." In The One and Only by Holly Hobbie, Toot and Puddle try to convince Opal that imitation is the highest form of flattery, as Bubbles copies her clothes and costume ideas. But when Bubbles gets on Opal's last nerve, the heroine finds a way to use Bubbles's mimicry to save the class play. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
From The Critics
Bubbles is the new girl in school and she takes a shine to Opal, so much so that she begins to copy everything that Opal does. Her Halloween costume is quite similar, her Thanksgiving card and even the snowflake she makes are all quite like Opal's. As the school year continues, she is not only a copycat but also the teacher's pet and the most popular student in class. Opal asks the advice of Toot and Puddle all year. When it is time for the spring extravaganza, Bubbles just cannot get the rhythm right for the chorus line. Opal works and works with her until she gets it. Praise from her teacher and the feeling that she did the right thing make Opal feel wonderful. Hobbie brings out Opal's feelings, as well as the feelings of the new student and how the class adapts to her. Toot and Puddle are there offering good advice for the situation. The seasonal changes in both the text and the watercolor illustrations bring the reader through the school year. The expressive pigs bring the emotional content to the forefront, while the soft shades of the illustrations do a fine job of modulating the tone. One of my favorite spreads is when the class is playing in the schoolyard in the snow. Every pig has a distinct and interesting expression. Toot and Puddle fans will be happy to have a new title. Those who are just discovering these wonderful pigs and their stories will want to search for others.
