Overview

The British Army’s SAS—the Special Air Service—is recognized as one of the world’s premier special operations units. During the Gulf War, deep behind Iraqi lines, an SAS team was compromised. A fierce firefight ensued, and the eight men were forced to run for their lives. Only one, Chris Ryan, escaped capture—by walking nearly 180 miles through the desert for a week. The One That Got Away is his breathtaking story of extraordinary courage under fire, of narrow escapes, of highly trained soldiers struggling against the most adverse of conditions, and, above all, of one man’s courageous refusal to lie down and die.

I had a problem with this book.

Listen, no one can say that this isn't an unbelievable story. It is. But I don't think it is exceptionally well written. Even more importantly, I don't like the tone. Chris portrays himself as a superhero amongst idiots and/or those without his will and desire. I found that hard to believe -- these are SAS soliders he's talking about, a pretty elite bunch. I also took his 'candor' as demeaning to the rest of the patrol. Put yourself in Andy McNab's or Vince's shoes when you read this, or better yet the shoes of their friends and family. I found it to be overly unprofessional, and hard to believe. Read BRAVO TWO ZERO by Andy McNab. It's very well written, and it's professional. For those of you who don't know, Andy was one the members of the patrol that was tortured for keeping his mouth shut so that Chris could make it to the border. Those guys that were tortured and remained silent, they're the REAL Heros.

    Outstanding

This book shows that even after dumping all of their equipment besides what they stand in, and they are split up and and on their own, the SAS are so well trained they can stand up, fight, dare and win. This is one of the best books I have ever read.

A pretty good book so is the Film

I have read this book a couple of times, It is very blunt at times and gives you insight as to what it must have been like for Chris Ryan on the run for so long and over so much terrain. It is amazing, the proffesionalism of the soldiers in that unit, to still observe all of their disciplines in such circumstances.
