I read this book in two days. Mr. Hay drags us kicking and screaming into the horrors of war and he doesn't hold anything back. Many soldiers who served in WW1 originally immigrated from Scotland to take up life in Canada prior to the outbreak of war. Throughout his book Mr. Hay has chosen to keep the Scottish dialogue of many of his characters in tact. A nice historical touch.
