The Osbourne Family Album [Explicit Lyrics]

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
While its title might suggest an album by one of television's perennial favorite families -- the Partridges, that is -- this 13-song compilation isn't exactly an extension of the Osbournes' reality show. Yes, there are contributions from Papa Ozzy including a pair of ballads, "Dreamer" and "Mama, I'm Coming Home" and daughter Kelly her much-discussed take on Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach," on which she's backed by the guys in Incubus. But a good bit of this Family Album is actually devoted to tunes that the brood allegedly spins in its own listening hours -- a playlist diverse enough to include the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" and Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight." The disc is rounded out by some rather interesting interpretations of tunes from the former Black Sabbath frontman's past, ranging from System of a Down's spasmodic version of "Snowblind" to crooner Pat Boone's Vegas-ized version of "Crazy Train," which even Lawrence Welk could love. Family-penned liner notes and short snippets of dialogue from the TV show bring the sass and color of your favorite Osbournes front and center, lending the album almost as much personality as Ozzy's brood.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
No one should mistake The Osbourne Family Album as an Ozzy Osbourne album -- it's the soundtrack to the ludicrously successful MTV reality sitcom The Osbournes and, as such, it plays to the unexpected crossover Ozzy and clan earned with the show, not his longtime fans. In fact, there are only three Ozzy songs here -- "Dreamer," a real nice ballad from his fall 2001 release Down to Earth the album he was promoting when the show was shot; "Mama, I'm Coming Home," which his wife, Sharon, claims in the liner notes was written for her when he was on tour for a long, long time; and, of course, "Crazy Train," -- which is also present in Pat Boone's kitschy, loungey cover, since it is, after all, the theme of the series. The rest is a hodgepodge that attempts to replicate the feel of the show and the personalities of the family while offering career boosts to Osbourne children, Jack he pushes Dillusion, a band he's been "developing over at Epic for a year now, so being as it was [his] signing, [he] thought including this song was only appropriate"; Dillusion is an American variation on Radiohead, which means there's a touch of metal to the guitars, and the arty moodiness has been replaced with earnest moodiness and Kelly singing a slickly hard-rocking cover of Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach," which is played straight and isn't that bad. Then, there's a bunch of other stuff that doesn't hold together musically, unless viewed as family favorites. The Kinks' "You Really Got Me" really got Ozzy into rock & roll, so it's here. Sharon remembers that daughter Aimee who opted out of starring in the series used to dance to the Cars' "Drive" as a child, so it's here. Kelly likes Starsailor, so a previously unreleased live version of "Good Souls" is here. Jack likes System of a Down, so "Snowblind," a song he believes "didn't get the recognition that it deserved," is here. John Lennon's "Imagine" is Ozzy and Sharon's song, so it's here, as is Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight," which Ozzy used to play as Sharon got ready to go out. Although it's not noted on the back cover, there are a bunch of dialogue snippets from the show interspersed throughout the album, which throws the indexing of the record completely off for instance, Dillusion's "Mirror Image" would be the ninth track, but it comes up as the 18th. Given the amount of dialogue and the number of different musical styles, this really isn't for anybody outside The Osbournes fanatic -- again, the show, not Ozzy -- but for those who love the show, this is a good aural souvenir.

    Osbournes RULE

If you havent heard this album, you should. Jack put a song on the cd from a band that he signed called Dillusion. That band Kicks smoke! (nice job jack) And beautiful kelly does a sweet cover of a madonna song. The Album is full of real dialoge from the show. Even if you're not a fan you will enjoy this cd. If you are a fan, this is a must have.

Ignore the Dialogue; Listen to the Music!!!

A word to the wicked...OK, the dialogue is witty and if you listen very carefully with North American Ears you might actually get most of it, but riding home from Stoudsburg with my friend Carrie (super nice woman for whom I purchased this wild collection) we found much of the spoken parts ignorable. But we did CRANK IT UP for the music. High (literally and figuratively) points include the You-Must-Be-On-Something-Boone version of Crazy Train (so psycho it's delicious), and Kelly O. who sounds like she's singing it over the phone (but it works well, really!) Papa Don't Preach (beating the ''other'' GIRL on her own MATERIAL). We also loved Clapton's Wonderful Tonight (even if it makes you remember every bad wedding-band you ever heard, or wore?). And nothin' beats the original Kink's You Really Got Me (sorry Diamond Dave). Imagine, made me teary for John, and want to pull out Neil's version again soon (from A Tribute to Heroes CD) to mellow out again. And that's only the half of it. The only possible down-side is if you already own much of this music. Ozzy's ballads and HIS version of Crazy Train (a classic) top off an all-over-the-map CD of great SUV-spinnin' after dinner (thanks again, Carrie!) sounds so variable in color and tone they soothe both a girl and a boy's 8th Cranial Nerves (the ones you hear with, friend) with equal efficacy.

    Like Ice Cream and Cheesecake...together!

OK, so my friend Carrie wanted to split desert with me after a fine meal. So I order the ''safe'' sounding cheesecake. And it arrives in a pie crust with ice cream right next to it. Whatzupwithdat? Well The Osbourne Family Album is like that. Good things, next to each other, you'd usually enjoy ALONE. We spun this disc all the way home after desert. It is down-right weird hearing the psycho Boone version of Crazy Train, and the Ozzy Classic on the same disc. Kelly's Papa Don't Preach ala hard rock with a phoned-in vocal really does fly and well; vocals like this over well-crafted metal are just strange bedfellows. And Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight (a secret pleasure of mine, and every wedding band on earth) is reproduced in it's splendor, but doesn't fit at all with any of the above. So, we enjoyed the CD on a long drive in the Poconos (thanks to my friend's great SUV skills), and approached it like it was an audio PROGRAM. And that people is the bottom line. This disc is intended to make you shake to the original You Really Got Me, and squirm to all the overly British-cum-Valley-Girl spoken word snippets in between the music. I say pick it up and enjoy it for what it is...a (not so) long strange trip!
