Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6-10-Myrick paints a portrait of how ordinary German citizens in a small, rural town experienced and viewed World War II. Unfortunately, the writing is inconsistent, poorly edited, and uninspiring. The author's collection of memories and the stories of her family's life in Chemnitz and Rabenstein, just north of the Czechoslovakian border, are mostly disjointed, unrelated, and not always chronological. Myrick mentions Hitler's desire to create an Aryan race in passing but she fails to explain why her friends, neighbors, and family members chose to support or not support the Nazi Party. And, even though she participated in the Hitler Youth Movement, Myrick seemed completely oblivious to the F hrer's beliefs and platforms, and the real impact of the war. The book does not provide a context for today's readers to understand what life was like for a young girl growing up in Nazi Germany, and the inaccessibility of the writing will make it difficult to find an audience.-Rachel Kamin, Temple Israel Libraries & Media Center, West Bloomfield, MI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
