Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kip Wilson
One of the "Milestones in American History" series produced by Chelsea House, this book begins by placing the reader on the plantation of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States, in 1861. Wagner uses the first chapter to provide a biography of Davis while sketching an overview of the situation that led up to the Civil War, including the secession of South Carolina and other states from the United States. The second chapter focuses on the issue of slavery, and includes an informative profile and authentic photo of Sojourner Truth, escaped female slave. Other chapters cover abolitionist John Brown's raid on the armory at Harper's Ferry, the Supreme Court case on slave Dred Scott, and the politics surrounding these incidents and the growing divide between the North and South. Special attention is paid to President Lincoln, and part of the text of his inaugural address is included. An excerpt of the "Declaration of the Causes of Secession" is also included, drawing readers in with the real-life text. The book concludes with the attack on Fort Sumter by Confederate troops and the beginning of the war. A bit dry at times, the book is spiced up by the inclusion of text from primary sources, including some authentic letters. The photos and images included are likewise authentic and help place the readers into the situation at the time, but it would have been nice to have even more images. Finally, the chronology at the end of the book helps place the events described into the larger context of the Civil War. Reviewer: Kip Wilson
