Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Intrepid or not, outdoorsy types will appreciate the safety tips and skills offered up in The Outdoor Adventure Handbook by Hugh McManners. Including pointers on how to tie knots, read a map and compass, give first aid, sterilize water, choose a campsite and make a fire, and illustrated with hundreds of full-color photographs, it's a must-read for novice campers. )
Children's Literature - Donna Freedman
Almost completely wonderful, this book is packed with innovative techniques for packing, making camp, building a fire, administering first aid and other useful information. The text is written with intelligence and energy; splendid photos show kids demonstrating outdoors skills. Unfortunately, the book has three major failings. It's not emphatic enough about the need to treat ALL water; folks who drink from that pure-looking stream may wind up with giardia or worse. It mentions "the camp toilet" only in the abstract, with no real advice on sanitation. Worst of all, it never tells children that they should always have an adult along on their adventures. Kids who read the book will become very knowledgeable indeed, but heaven forbid that they stroll off alone to try their hand at map reading or fire building. Do purchase the book, but supplement it with information on water safety and sanitation in the wild - and emphasize over and over that grownups need to be involved.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6Every inch of this attractive book is crammed with useful information and full-color photos. Children are offered instruction for a variety of outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, cooking, and basic first aid. How-to projects include making a simple compass and map, choosing a campsite and setting up a tent, and making a fire, all detailed on double-page spreads. Common-sense cautions and suggestions for adult guidance accompany many activities. Throughout the presentation, children are encouraged to explore and enjoy outdoor fun. The small print may deter some readers, but for those who are eager to learn about the intricacies of camping in the backyard or in the wilderness, this guide is an ideal place to start.Eva Elisabeth Von Ancken, Trinity Pawling School, NY
