The Outer Coastby Richard Batman
The Outer Coast Isaac Graham leaped out of the bed as more shots were fired - at such close range that the powder flashes set his shirt on fire. Graham was hit only once, in the left arm. As his assailants backed away to reload, he saw there were too many to fight and tried to bolt from the room. He did not reach the door before they were on him, using their combined weight to ride him down. Then as he lay on the floor struggling, one of them pulled a knife and tried to stab him. The stab missed. Before the intruder could try again, the others dragged Graham from the room and up the hill behind his house. There stood Governor Alvarado's old friend Jose Castro, who reached out and, with the back of his sword, hit Graham over the head hard enough to knock him down. Graham, convinced they were going to kill him, asked for time to commend his soul to God. He was told, "You shall never pray till you kneel over your grave."
