Sandy Whiteley ((Reviewed
For children ages 9-12, this book contains biographies of 1,000 people from all parts of the world and all time periods. Subjects range in time from Egyptian pharoah Khufu (26,000 B.C.) to such contemporary figures as Benazir Bhutto and Wayne Gretzky. The typical 100-word entry begins with a tag that identifies the person (""Saint Thomas Aquinas", Italian religious leader and philosopher"), birth and death dates, and age at death. Handsome illustrations, most of them in color, appear on every page. Some of them are portraits, but many are of something associated with the person, for example, Hadrian's Wall or a painting by Rossetti. Cross-references point to related entries (e.g., from William Randolph Hearst to Orson Welles). At the end of the book, the subjects are indexed by occupation and by date of birth. They represent not only politics but the arts, sports, entertainment, religion, science, and exploration. A nationality index would have been useful. Many nations are represented; there is good coverage of Americans, and no particular bias for Britons. But Oxford wants to sell this book all over the world, so it includes some people who will be of no interest to American children (e.g., cricket players from Commonwealth countries). Many names will be unknown to children but worth investigating (German chemist Fritz Haber and the Lumiere brothers, early filmmakers). It's questionable whether elementary-school children will really be interested in Gide or Hegel, but there are enough pop-culture stars like Madonna and Michael Jackson to keep kids browsing so that they will encounter the important figures from history attractively presented here.
Adam Sandell
Over 500 photographs, drawings, and maps complete the picture, and the alphabetical fornat and a detailed introduction make the layout easy to understand. Kids will enjoy both new and familiar faces Jackson Pollock, John Lennon, and adults can sneak a peek to indulge a guilty pleasure Tom Cruise, Mick Jagger.
