In the Oxford Illustrated History of the Vikings, twelve reading scholars draw on the latest research and archaeological evidence to provide the dearest picture yet of this fabled people. Painting a fascinating portrait of the influences that the "Northmen" had on foreign lands, the contributors trace Viking excursions to the British Islands, Russia, Iceland, Greenland, and the northern tip of Newfoundland. We meet the great Viking kings, took at the day-to-day social tile of the Vikings, and learn about their almost religious reverence for boats and boat-building. But perhaps most important, the book goes a tong way towards answering the age-old question of who these people were. The contributors show that the Vikings did indeed control, the Northern Seas with the viciousness of pirates and that they pillaged Christian towns with relentless ferocity. And yet we also discover that they were shrewd traders whose dealings in fur in Russia and walrus tusks in Iceland were the envy of Europe.

I am a high school sophomore who had to do a research project, and I chose this book for my report. This book
on the Vikings is very descriptive and I found the Viking legacy, ships, raids, and explorations tremendously
fascinating. However, my personal favorites were the sections that talked about their religion and mythology. I
also enjoyed having the visuals of the remains of their weapons, treasures, and artworks because it really gave
an idea of what they used, collected, and made at the time. The maps that were provided were also very helpful
in  pinpointing locations on where the Vikings stayed, where an important boundary was made, etc. However, I
would only recommend this book for students who have a deep love for reading the history of the Vikings. This
book goes all out  on the descriptions of the Viking's life in the countries they conquered. Sometimes I would
find myself getting tired of reading and set the book down for a while. Its almost like reading a textbook. Though
this may sound boring now, it has a ton of great information on the lives, experiences, end and legacy of the
