    Great articles, skimpy text annotations

Though the textual annotations -- the verse-by-verse notes -- are pretty skimpy compared to New Oxford Annotated, or HarperCollins Study Bibles, they are quite good, especially for some books. The notes in 'Revelation' for example are very helpful. 'Oxford Study Bible' is excellent for its scholarly introductory articles: 'Literary Forms of the Bible' 'Historical Contexts of the Biblical Communities' 'The Contributions of Archaeology' 'Literature of the Ancient Near East' 'The Social World of the Old Testament' 'The Social World of the New Testament' 'The Dead Sea Scrolls and Other Jewish Literture' 'The Phenomenon of Prophecy' 'The Apocalyptic Vision' ....and many others (this is just a selection). My hardcover edition has a select index (20 pages), 14 very nice color maps and a map index. Translation used is the 'Revised English Bible,' a very readable and enjoyable version. Typeface is visually good and the paper has minimal show-through. A very good choice.

    I Also Recommend:

    Outstanding Study Bible

The Oxford Study Bible with Apocrypha (Revised English Version) provides a lucid, intelligent introduction to reading the Bible. The translation is the most readable of all modern English translations. The history of this study Bible includes impressive editors. The notes are not as extensive as some other Oxford Study Bibles but the essays define a fine introduction for even a novice reader of the English Bible.
