Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Enlisting a team of scholars and translators in a complex undertaking, the publisher, guided by John W. O'Malley (Weston Jesuit Sch. of Theology) and others, has produced an English edition of the highly regarded Dictionnaire historique de la papaute, whose general editor, Philippe Levillain, is a historian and professor (Univ. of Paris-X, Nanterre). While most of the text is directly translated from the French, the updating covers developments during the seven-year gap between the French and English editions and incorporates newly commissioned articles. Contributed by more than 200 international scholars, the signed, indexed, and referenced articles are broad in scope, including not only biographies of the popes and anti-popes but religious orders, encyclicals, historical events, controversies, and the arts in its double-column pages. Similar but more limited works include Richard P. McBrien's Lives of the Popes (LJ 10/15/97), Encyclopedia of the Vatican and Papacy (LJ 11/15/98), and Dictionary of Popes and the Papacy (Herder & Herder, 2001) evidence of continuing interest in the papacy. Revised and expanded for the English-speaking world, this encyclopedia should become the standard source on the subject. Highly recommended for public, academic, and religious collections. Anna M.
