Overview

These volumes, published in conjunction with the Rhode Island Historical Society, represent the result of an exhaustive search for documents relating to the life and career of Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. The papers—letters and documents received by Greene as well as those sent by him—are carefully edited and fully annotated. The editors reproduce many items in full but abstract papers that are of lesser significance. Greene, who served as quartermaster general of the army and later as commander of the forces fighting in the southern theater, is generally considered the ablest of Washington's generals. His papers are a vital source of information on the war itself as well as on the man.

General Nathanael Greene (1742-1786) was one of the most important figures in the American Revolution--second only to George Washington. Greene is of particular interest in connection with the Revolution in the South, where he made his reputation as a strategist. A group of scholars associated with the Rhode Island Historical Society has assembled Greene's papers in a multi-volume set published over the last 15 years by the U. of North Carolina Press. Volume 6 covers the beginnings of Greene's campaign in the South, June 1, 1780-December 25, 1780. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

What People are saying about this

From the Publisher
The editors of the Greene Papers must be commended for their superb work in selection, transcription, and annotation. . . . Scholars of American civil-military relations and the impact of the Revolution on civilian society will be remiss if they do not tap into the rich materials found in these volumes.—Military History

The Papers of Nathanael Greene took over a generation to complete and the institutional sponsors of the thirteen volumes should be applauded for their sustained commitment. Equally impressive is the ability of successive editors to maintain high editorial standards over such a long period. These volumes will endure.—Journal of Military History
