About the Author

Horace W. Raper is a professor emeritus at Tennessee Technological University. He is the author of a number of articles in the North Carolina Historical Review and of the biography William W. Holden: North Carolina's Political Enigma. Thornton W. Mitchell was the former state archivist of North Carolina.
