The Parable of the Four Soils concerns a Sower (Jesus) who scatters seed (the Word), which falls on four different soils (the hearts of people).

The wayside soil prevents the seed from sprouting at all, and the seed becomes nothing more than bird food. The wayside soil represents a closed and neglected heart.

The stony soil provides enough soil for the seeds to germinate and begin to grow, but because there is "no depth of earth," the plants soon withered in the sun. The stony soil represents the careless heart.

The thorny soil allows the seed to grow, but the four competing thorns choke the life out of the young plants. The thorny soil represents the crowded heart.

Finally, the good soil receives the seed and produces thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold fruit. The good soil represents the cultivated heart.
