Probably the best of the Hooded Swan series, "The Paradise Game" wraps just enough science around the imaginative fiction to make a great story, and tells it in the eminently readable Stableford fashion.
The whole basis of life on earth is challenged with an alternative model that comes close to being the polar opposite of our concept of life based on competition and survival of the fittest.
The story line is well developed, suspenseful, and not bogged down in character development, or excessive attempts to explain the science. Based on the previous books in the series, those elements can simply be taken for granted while the author explores the new "What If" theory of life.
Best if read as part of the Hooded Swan series, the book stands alone well enough. But why would you want to do that and miss out on the previous stories.
