Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Uma Krishnaswami
Margaret Read MacDonald is a storyteller's storyteller. She starts out by saying we don't really need any instruction at all, because what parent doesn't already tell stories dozens of times a day? Then she proceeds to inform, enlighten and instruct us on not just the why of storytelling, but the how, when and where as well. From fingerplay to endless tales, from scary stories to family folklore to spontaneously created stories, MacDonald encourages her adult readers to develop their own skills and to involve their young listeners actively in this most ancient of recreational pastimes. She relates storytelling to life, which is, of course, exactly as it should be. She provides additional books and resources in a book that deserves to be well-thumbed.
