    Very Fun/Upbeat Vegan Cookbook!

    I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was a very beginner friendly recipe book for someone thinking about going vegan. The recipes sound delicious and do not require very unique ingredients like many other vegan and vegetarian cookbooks. This is not any kind of activist book, like some vegan cookbooks are. It does not make you feel guilty about your diet if you don't eat vegan now. The author has a cute sense of humor, sort of like how she has jokes or funny phrases in the sentences that aren't too funny but you have to laugh because she obviously thinks that she is humorous! The presentation of the book is beautiful from cover through the pages. There are not any pictures of the recipes which leads me to give 4 stars, but besides that it was a quick read, and very useful. I do highly recommend this book to someone who is thinking about changing their diets, for an easy way to whip up some good vegan food.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze book review bloggers program.     great for a "meatless monday" meal plan

    First of all, let me confess. I am the woman that hates to cook, but has a bunch of cookbooks... maybe part of that is that I hope a recipe will inspire an enjoyment of cooking or something ;) I was intrigued with the title of this book, "Part-Time Vegan" (emphasis mine). My husband and I have been kicking around the idea of having "meatless Monday" or something like that - to help financially and get some more veggies in our bodies! I now have a cookbook with more sticky-noted recipes than ever. I really appreciated the author's first chapter, "Veganism 101." She addresses what being a vegan means. She reminds the reader that it's "not a fad diet and should never be treated as one" (p.3). She stresses talking to your doctor if you'd like to make it a lifetime change. But, what I liked most was her explanation of vegan ingredients. Without this, the book full of recipes would be meaningless to a non-vegan person like myself. I now know what ingredients replace what (and honestly, where I can "cheat" and just use a non-vegan product in a pinch to complete a recipe). The recipes are broken up into appropriate chapters and some recipes even include "part time tips" if the reader is like I am, and just interested in inserting more vegan-type meals into the meal plan. I heartily recommend this book (with the warning that she does use some strong language within her dialog on veganism). I am excited to begin introducing some of these recipes into our monthly meals. The ingredients are on my next shopping list!

    interesting

    I hate a book that go on and on about how healthy and good it is to be Vegan. A book that preach non-stop. Am glad I requested this book as this book is none of those things.


    It's well written and with a hint of humor too. That's very important to me as most cook books would send me to dreamland very fast.Just look at the "Table of Contentments". Don't you agree Cherise Grifoni have great sense of humor?

    Yup, I am not good in cooking. What makes me request for this book, then? Maybe it's my conscience. For wanting to cook a healthier meal for my family. I think this book is a keep for me.


    I have to say, I love the way it is written. Simple and concise. The recipe seems easy to make. Instruction is simple to follow.

    Great start for Beginners

    I was interested in how it works (ch 1 Veganism 101), what exactly is eaten, the nutritional value and learned that there is usually a Vegan way around things so you don't have to miss out entirely on your favorite things.

    This cookbook is great beginners guide. It has a full range of recipes starting from your basic appetizers to dinner plans. The only thing it didn't have that I look for in cookbooks is pictures.

    Recommended for vegan and non-vegan alike

    The Part Time Vegan lives up to its subtitle: "put the fun in flexitarian." Grifoni makes vegan cooking easy, fun and accessible. She shares a good dose of sarcasm along the way, making the directions for each recipe entertaining to follow. The recipes don't include lists of difficult to pronounce ingredients, or foods that are impossible to find in a normal grocery store.

    Before you head to the kitchen, the book starts with what Grifoni calls a "Totally Not Boring Intro" and a chapter entitled "Veganism 101." Read these few pages, and you are well on your way to eating vegan. Or to eating vegan part time. Or just occasionally. Or maybe only once or twice. No guilt here!

    The book contains 201 recipes, organized by the type of food on which it is based. Each recipe is labeled with protein, fiber, quick, and/or flex. The ones labeled protein or fiber are high in protein or fiber. Quite obviously. The ones labeled quick are quick and easy. Again, quite
    obviously. The ones labeled flex are easily adapted by substituting non-vegan ingredients into the recipe.

    The final chapter includes recipes organized into dinner plans. Each contains a recipe for an appetizer, and entree, and a dessert. Need a complete dinner menu all in one place? This is the chapter for you!

    The Part Time Vegan is exactly what Grifoni promises in the intro: "A no-nonsense, quick-witted guide to veganism." It's a pleasure to cook from, as well as a pleasure to read.

    Book Review: The Part-Time Vegan by Cherise Grifoni

    I'm a pollotarian by choice, I won't lie I have given vegetarianism some thought but I feel like if I lose my chicken I will lose my sanity. Veganism for me is on the end of the spectrum, its a very strict diet but you know what? Cherise does a phenomenal job on laying out (OMG delicious recipes!!!) the concept of being a vegan. I love how she has a sense of humor (and you see it all through the book). It seems to me that she knows how to add some spice in life, because I gave some recipes a try (desserts!) and I really enjoyed them. I like how she doesn't try to guilt trip you on animal rights, and believe me I've seen it done quite often in Vegan/Vegetarian books. After reading the book from cover to cover (which was extremely enjoyable, and mouthwatering!) I found her blog [Your Vegan Zombie] and I really liked it. She has helped me find new creative ways to get my protein and vitamins that I need (Cherise thank you!). I just loved the content all around! I know there will be a few recipes that even non-vegans will want to try (did I mention desserts?!), full of flavor and love, theres a recipe in this book for everyone.

    If there was one thing I do have to comment on is the lack of pictures. I love pictures what can I say? I would've loved it even more (and I already love it!) if there were pictures throughout the book to see how the dishes could turn out. Although it might've been because Cherise didn't want us to drool more over this book. I would definitely recommend it (and her blog too!) for anyone who wants some creativity in the kitchen, eat healthier, or just wants to try some delish food make sure to add this to your recipe book collection!

    like watching a cooking show

    It was unlike other recipe books that I'd encountered. It gives me the impression that Cherise Grifoni probably loves talking as much as she is as passionate about being a vegetarian. Reading the book makes me feel like I'm watching a cooking show because of the conversational way that she writes. I haven't tried any of the recipes yet because some of the ingredients are not really that popular and we don't have them at home. Notwithstanding that, I think that the procedures in the recipes are easy to follow. Recipes include dips and appetizers, breakfast meals, salad dressings, salads, soups, vegetables dishes, rice, pasta, grains, tofu and desserts. Vegans, would-be vegetarians or those plain curious about going vegetarians will probably find this book helpful.     Great Starter for Part-Time Vegans

    I am most certainly a part-time vegan (mostly for health and taste concerns), and have been working on getting my family to at least "part-time" vegan status for their health (and, importantly, my grocery bill). I often succeed in swapping out meats with beans (love black bean tacos), but don't usually succeed when tofu (or similar) are involved.

    This book has proven to be a useful addition to my vegan cooking attempts. My first pick was the Seitan Buffalo Wings (pg 174) because I have a serious weakness for all things buffalo. Getting past the texture of the seitan (which I had never had before), the recipe wasn't half bad. (But again, put buffalo sauce on it, and I'm there!)

    We also tried the Sweet Potato Fries (pg 86), as we've had them before in restaurants and enjoyed them. Chocolate Chip Cookies (pg 200) were okay, except that the vegan chocolate chips weren't nearly as good as the original.

    I appreciate that the author uses "real" ingredients in the recipes. Other than the tofu, tempeh, or seitan, I keep the other recipe ingredients on hand. I never found myself going from store to store searching for some obscure ingredient.

    All in all, I enjoyed cooking from this book. I would have loved to have seen some pictures of the recipes (as I think they catch your eye a little better, and give you some idea of what you're going to be cooking). I think it works especially well for things that are simply vegan recipes, not vegan-recipes-trying-to-be-non-vegan recipes. We will continue to cook from this book, and hopefully convert more of the household into (at least) part-time vegans.

    Good Introduction

    In her book The Part-Time Vegan, Cherise Grifoni encourages readers to gradually adopt a vegan or vegetarian diet. The book includes over 200 recipes, from breakfasts to dinners to desserts. Examples include Vegan Pesto Potato Salad, Mediterranean Quinoa Pilaf, and Carob-Peanut Butter Smoothie. A glossary and meal plans are included, as well as tips for avoiding hidden animal products. The recipes in this book are straightforward, and the meal plans are appealing. I highly recommend this down-to-earth cookbook for novices and vegan veterans alike.     Put the yum in being vegan

    I was really jazzed about getting this book as a review choice because I have a 17 year old daughter who adopted the way of the vegan when she was in middle school.
    I will be honest it is frustrating when I try to fix a healthy meal that is also one she will eat and she says, does it have this, this and this in it and I meekly with a measure of guilt say, yes but.....
    So you can imagine how excited I am to be able to add this vegan cookbook to my collection.

    The back of the book blurb says....

    "It's all good, according to Cherise Grifoni, your fearless guide to the seemingly complex world of no-meat, no-eggs, no-dairy. In this guilt-free cookbook, you'll discover how to go vegan without feeling any pressure whatsoever. But a warning: the mouthwatering recipes may have you transitioning to full-time much sooner thatn you anticipated!

    Now the question is, does it deliver?

    I have to say I love the cover art work.
    And when you open it up the pages are well laid out, easy to read and it has a hip, young rhythm to it.

    I thought at first the pages felt like they were made from recycled paper, and that would have just added to my appreciation of the book, but I could not validate that.
    But alas the pages are a bit on the plain side. There are no picture of any of the recipes. The pages are all green text with white background.

    Chapter 1 is all about helping you and me understand veganism. Well I can honestly say I need all the help I can get, but after reading the bit on honey and whether you should you eat it or not, I am still nodding my head a bit. And will keep honey in my diet, occasionally that it.

    The recipes I have to say sound interesting and appetizing.
    My kids love hazelnut spread and there is a yummy recipe on page 11, that also looks easy to prepare.
    I may just adopt the meatless Monday, in support of my very vegan daughter.

    I think my favorite part of this book is found on page 186, where the author has included preplanned menus.
    I love menus!
    It just makes it so much more fun when you have that part done for you. It enables you to get a real feel for the cookbook as a whole one meal at a time.
