Overview

Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ was an unprecedented blockbuster, so it's only natural that a raft of tie-ins has kept the momentum of the controversial film going. This collection of 12 moody melodies (one for each apostle?), selected with some input by Gibson, presents great pop voices in their hour of need. The intent is to mirror the questioning and faith of Jesus' last hours in contemporary song. With artists as deep and dark as Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, and Bob Dylan, it's tempting to draw parallels between the trials of the Christ and the earthly torments of your bohemian artist. In the end, though, these inspirations are as literal as Gibson's film: From Ricky Skaggs' bluegrass brimstone "Are You Afraid to Die?" (new to the compilation) to Cranberry Dolores O'Riordan's rendition of "Ave Maria," this is Christian music delivered by some ostensibly secular sources. And also like the film, these performances go for the guts.

Marvelous...These songs evoke compassion, which makes us wonder: Wasn't Mel listening?
