Huamalies, 31 May 1989..Bruce Benson could not believe it was happening...The time was around 8:00 a.m. He, Jan, and their 14-year-old son Bryan had been on the road for two hours, heading back to Huánuco. The Bensons, missionaries with Wycliffe Bible Translators, had spent the past fortnight in Llata, a small town high in the Peruvian Andes. During their stay, they had participated in conferences of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and worked on a Quechua translation of the Scriptures. They were anxious to get home and see their daughters, Kristen and Kara, who had stayed in Huánuco with family friends...But the Bensons would not make it home that day...Rounding a curve, Bruce had to brake suddenly to avoid colliding with a flatbed truck that straddled the narrow dirt road. Within seconds, young men and women in army fatigues began cascading off the sides of the truck. They surrounded the Bensons' car and pointed their automatic weapons in the faces of the three people inside...'Get out! Get out!' they shouted. 'We're going to burn your car!'
