School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-7 This thorough, if anecdotal, book presents the Peace Corps foremost through its human dimension. After a short history, the focus of the volume is on presenting those who have served as well as those who have been served by the good works of this agency. Fitzgerald offers information about the various programs that have been developed as well as a personal view of the reaction of people to the experience. Special programs for women and to encourage the sharing of ideas and know-how are highlighted. Some readers may be put off by the use of fictitious composite sketches of volunteers, rather than real subjects' stories. Yet this volume is upbeat and even inspiring as it reveals the unbridled joy of the volunteers, which is sustained through many hardships. Information is provided about how to join and what to expect for training and placement. A much needed volume. Steve Matthews, Foxcroft School, Middleburg, Va.
