The Pearl Savage (Savage Series, Book 1) [NOOK Book]

An AWESOME Read!

This is a very well written novel. I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting; I've read Blodgett's other book, Death Whispers, and I knew she was a great writer, but she still blew me away with this novel. It's completely different from Death Whispers and, if I didn't already know that Blodgett wrote them, I'd never think that the same writer was responsible for both novels. They are so completely different, yet both beautifully written.

What I really love about this novel is that Blodgett keeps the story fresh and original-I've never read anything like it-and she maintains an almost archaic tone throughout the prose and dialogue, never straying into modernization or slang, which I've noted a lot of authors do accidentally when trying to write a novel from another time period. It is obvious that Blodgett has put a lot of time and love into this novel, perfecting the language and causing the reader to transport to another world entirely, becoming lost within the pages of this epic novel.

Although the story takes place in the future and is superior in terms of technological advances (a sort of steampunk novel), the society seems to have backtracked as well, at least in terms of language, giving it a historical feel while at the same time lending itself to both the paranormal and fantasy genre. I thought it was ingenious that 19 states in the USA are kingdoms within themselves, set inside a sphere, as the outside air is tainted and savages roam the land. Although the background concerning the Guardians/Evil Ones is not fully disclosed, including how the divide between the sphere and the outside world truly came to be, the story will maintain reader interest through the constant action and fascinating love triangle of sorts-and the sequel is set up to answer any ensuing questions one might have.

While more of a romance story than that of suspense, Blodgett still captures the reader and creates suspense in terms of character actions, withholding key information until the perfect time to drop it upon the reader. On more than one occasion I found myself fretting for Clara, the kindhearted princess subjected to abuse from Queen Ada and her betrothed, Prince Frederic. These two characters set my teeth on edge and their interactions within the novel made me cringe. Yet, juxtaposed with these two evil characters is a cast of dashing young men forever at the aide of Clara, and I honestly cannot pick a favorite. I think I switched loyalties at least five times within the novel, constantly going back and forth between the characters as new information was provided. And as of yet, I still haven't decided where my loyalties lie!

Blodgett does not end her novel hanging by a thread, but she does leave it open for a sequel, for which I am very excited, as there are new mysteries waiting to be solved. I cannot wait to find out who Clara chooses and how the Guardians/Evil Ones come into play, forever changing the earth. This novel, set to release June 16th, is completely different and a truly wonderful read that you won't want to miss! Four stars!

Amazing

I can't get enough of this book! It was so good!
It hd me hooked like 10 pages in. And the ending! It was a cliffhanger,but it was just like... why? It was so good and the author let this mold into nother book. I can't wait for it! Oooooohhhhhhha!

Let me first start off by saying a HUGE thank you to Tamara for giving me a second chance with her. I had to call a DNF (Do Not Finish) with one of her books. It just wasn't for me. But being the generous author that she is...she offered me a chance to read a different book from a different series of hers. And once I started I knew I would love it. So unlike anything I have read. Almost a mixture of Steampunk/Dystopian/Fantasy.

Living in the confines of her Sphere, Princess Clara is treated anything but royal like. Clara lives with the abuse at the hands of her drunk mother, Queen Ada. And now her betrothed, Prince Frederick, is also abusing her. Willing to risk the Savages and the possible tainted air outside her sphere, Clara and good friend, Charles, concoct a plan to escape into the Outside.

Little did she know that the Savages living in the Outside have other plans for her. They hope to use Clara as a means for negotiating a truce to have their people and the sphere-dwellers live in peace together. But what starts out as a well laid plan soon disintegrates and all hell breaks loose. Will Clara find the freedom she so desperately seeks? And will the Savages be able to find peace among the sphere-dwellers in order to help save their own?

The people of the sphere still live, talk and dress as if they are back in the late 1800’s. And I absolutely loved it. They enter these spheres when the Earth was covered in Ash. And it’s as if they were stuck in that time period for the next 140 years. Luckily the people Outside still survived after the destruction on earth, but they were always considered Savages. The whole idea that Tamara came up with was unique and fascinating. I truly became addicted to both life styles the people inside the spheres and out lived.

A lot goes on in the story, so pay attention. I mean it’s not a complicated story to follow…but so much goes on you will want to stay focused. Almost every character in the book has their own agenda when it comes to Clara, so lots will happen. And just when you think Clara will end up with someone, the author shakes things up a bit and you are left thinking ‘did she really just do that? Oh yeah, she did. I loved how I had no idea what was coming next; always taken completely by surprise.

Revenge, pride, lust, sacrifice, friendship, and power all play a part in this fast paced, phenomenal story.

Can't finish

I fear the prose and dialogue are both too stilted and ridiculous to bear. Alas, having reached only the page fifty-one, I find I must lay me down upon my fainting couch and rest my weary sensibilities, my reader's heart and mind unrequited and dissatisfied.

One word………AMAZING! BEST BOOK I'VE READ IN FOREVER! Beautifully written! Very few mistakes! Guaranteed to capture readers hearts and make you fall in love with characters and despise the bad characters!

Interesting

This book had a very unusual and fascinating premise. It is written from a nearly present day dystopian period, with enough mystery as to various plot and character elements that it could easily be characterized as a Fantasy or Sci-Fi novel. I hope some of these mysterious elements are revealed in the next book in the series.

My only criticsm is the there are far too many grammatical, punctuation and sentence structure errors for a serious novel. Many sentences are incomplete or nonsensical. Sometimes this seems to be the result of the author mistakenly writing as if in the first person. Otherwise the author may be unaware of these errors. It is my hope that the author submits to a more critical editing process or something of that order. With such a talent for creative storytelling this is an author who deserves a place on bookstore and library shelves everywhere.

I very much enjoyed this book and think its well worth reading. There were however a lot of errors in grammer and puntuation along with sentences that did not make sense. I would love to know how a man could possibly rest his hands on his "elbows".
I would read more by this author.

Good, but not great.

I am very grateful to both the author and B&N for making this book available for free. It was a good read and had me enthralled for the first 400 pages. Unfortunately, as the plot develops, some of the characters become weaker as their personalities become inconsistent. Some characters could have been developed more thoroughly and the story seemed to have a whole lot of events happen all at once in order to wrap up the book. It is almost as if the author realized that the book might be getting too long and instead of making a series of climatic and interesting events take place, she decided to just throw them all together and rush to a finish.

Overall, the book was decent and I am glad that I read it.

I really liked this book. Beautiful descriptions without being overly so. The author really took the time to develop her characters, I really got involved in the story line and can't wait to read the sequel. Great job! I will definitely get Death Whispers now to see what the differences are, any author that can totally change her style of writing has got some talent!

Not very good...

I really wanted to like this book - I promise, I really did. The story was actually pretty interesting, but the grammar was just sooooo bad.... Seriously. Run-on sentences, then random chunks of sentences that made no sense - it was enough to drive a grammar-freak like me crazy. I just couldn't handle it and had to put this book down. I might reconsider reading this book once it's had some major editing work done, but until then, 2 stars it is.
