Overview

Jimmy Sullivan has been living on the road with his brother, Jack, and his band the Unknown Souls. Without a place to call home, Jimmy and Jack lead a nomadic life filled with music and anonymous cities. When they return to a place Jimmy never wants to see again — their old hometown of Palmetto Pointe, South Carolina — he falls in love with Charlotte Carrington.

With a soul now full of hope, Jimmy writes his first love song. When he performs it at a holiday concert to a standing ovation, the lyrics are dubbed the “Perfect Love Song,” so much so that Jimmy finds himself touring alongside famous country music stars — catapulted into a world where the trappings of fame and fortune reign supreme.

All too soon, the hope that had once inspired Jimmy to write such beautiful, genuine lyrics is overshadowed by what the song can do for him and his career. In his thirst for recognition, he agrees to miss his brother’s wedding in Ireland to sing at a Christmas Eve concert. And his ties with Charlotte seem to be ever so quickly fading away.

Alone on Christmas Eve in New York City, Jimmy finally sees — with a little help from some Christmas miracles — that his material gains are nothing compared to love, and that he is losing all that really matters. Is it too late to find his way to Ireland, to his brother, and to love?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A musician discovers the dangers of overnight fame in Henry's hackneyed holiday throwaway. Jimmy Sullivan lives on the road with his brother and his band, intent on getting away from unpleasant memories of his childhood. But when his brother, Jack, falls in love with childhood sweetheart Kara and returns home to be with her, Jimmy unexpectedly falls in love with her best friend, Charlotte, and writes her a love song that catapults him toward unexpected fame--but without Charlotte or his band along for the ride, Jimmy must decide what's most important to him. This wallows in the pitfalls of intrusive narration, simplistic storytelling, and overly moralistic asides, and is stocked with characters with all the staying power of a snowflake in July. (Oct.)

Jack and Jimmy Sullivan, brothers from Seaboro, South Carolina, are in a band called the "Unknown Souls." They spend much of their time traveling to gigs. When growing up, they lived next door to Kara Larson, who is now Jack's fiancee. Charlotte and Kara have been best friends since high school. Charlotte's father invites the brothers and the rest of the band to have Thanksgiving dinner with Kara, Charlotte and him. An Irish woman has described Ireland in such glowing terms that Kara decides to have her wedding there. Jimmy will be the best man and Charlotte the maid of honor. The band will be at the wedding, also. Jimmy realizes he is in love with Charlotte, writes his first song and dedicates it to Charlotte. His love song becomes a hit the first time he sings it. At first, Jimmy calls Charlotte every night when the band is on tour. But, when he is so much in demand, he can't find time to call every night. His every night calls slow to a trickle. Charlotte can't help but think about the groupies that hang around the band, especially around Jimmy. Arrangements are made for Jimmy to sing at Radio City Music Hall on Christmas Eve. That is when Jack will marry Kara. Jimmy is surprised that Jack does not understand this is one opportunity to get into the big time, but Jack doesn't. Charlotte refuses to take Jimmy's calls. Perhaps giving up love and family for his career is not worth it. This love story is one young girls will especially enjoy. Written by one of the New York Times' best-selling authors.
