Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Budding writers will surely appreciate The Perfect Pop-Up Punctuation Book by Kate Petty, illus. by Jennie Maizels. With tabs that pull and flaps that lift up to reveal the rules of punctuation on every page, this book will not only help young writers to clarify their sentence structure but will also breathe life into grammar lesson. Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
The creators of this book have produced several other quasieducational movable books. In general these books are overflowing with interesting characters, colorful art, multiple talk bubbles, and information overkill. It is a definite style, full of clutter with no open space, and you either like it or you do not. From the pop-up point of view, the book has plenty of action. There are three genuine pop-ups, dozens of pull-tabs, and countless flaps to lift. However, as an educational tool the pages are too busy for beginner grammarians. For instance, on the page that introduces commas as a tool for making a complicated sentence clear, a large flap must be raised and held up while the reader simultaneously pulls four tabs, dragging commas into place, in a long sentence under the tab. In some examples the need for punctuation is stretched in order to support an interesting action. Does the sentence, "Big cranes of all sorts are fun to watch," really need parentheses around "of all sorts?" Probably not, but a pop-up entertains by having a pair of big crane grabbers (looking somewhat like parentheses) drop the words of all sorts into the middle of the sentence. This is more puzzle and game book than punctuation manual.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-Filled with informative tabs, lift-the-flaps, and pop-ups, this highly interactive book acts as a giant grammar lesson. Readers will learn the proper use for commas, semicolons, colons, exclamation points, dashes, and more. The text is funny as well; for example, the section called "comma jokes" shows how commas change the meaning of sentences: "Let's eat the kids begged Mom" becomes "`Let's eat,' the kids begged Mom." Children will enjoy this book, though its engineering design makes it delicate for heavy circulation. Consider a copy for reference or classroom use.-Lisa Gangemi Kropp, Middle Country Public Library, Centereach, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
