What People Are Saying

Clive Barker
The Phantom of the Movies' ®VideoScope is for every fan of the obscure and the witty, the weird, the terrifying, and the fantastic: a comprehensive and passionate celebration of movies in all their tacky glamour. I can't imagine any film fans who wouldn't want a copy of this book on their shelves."
Joe Dante
You need this book! So many movies—so little time! Who can see them all? And who can you trust? The Phantom of the Movies®! The Phantom provides an authoritative, unique, and informative spin on the movies we all love, even when they don't deserve it!"
John Sayles
The Phantom's VideoScope is an almost free-associational speed-rap on genre and fringe movies. If you're interested in films made far off the beaten path, you'll find them here.

    The Phantom Knows!

I've subscribed to the Phantom's Videoscope magazine for several years and practically wore out a copy of his prior video guide. I was delighted with this updated version, which covers most of the key and many obscure video releases in the genres of horror, science fiction, action, exploitation, j.d., comedy, and badfilm. The Phantom (Joe Kane) is an entertaining and informative writer. His reviews are fun, with bits of information about films ranging from CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS to BLACK ORPHEUS. Also, unlike most other video guides, the Phantom wrote all of the reviews collected in the book and saw all of the films reviewed. His introduction to the book is a cogent appraisal of the current home video market and how you can use this guide to check out the less hyped, but more rewarding, films that snuck into release (e.g., TERROR SQUAD, T-FORCE, NAKED OBSESSION, etc.) I thought the book was a great cover-to-cover read, and it will be an essential reference in the years to come. The book also includes fine interviews with major cult film personalities (e.g, John Waters, Sam Raimi, Jean-Claude Van Damme), memorable quotes from films, backstories, and more. This book belongs on your reference shelf with the two Psychotronic volumes by Michael Weldon and The Overlook Film Encyclopedias on Horror and Science Fiction by Phil Hardy.

The Phantom Sees All, Reviews All!

NY Daily News columnist the Phantom (Joe Kane) has been haunting the B-movie seen since the mid-Seventies, when he edited the tabloid monster movies magazine THE MONSTER TIMES. Kane has a breezy, witty review style, telling it like he believes it is. He'll give a good review of a halfway decent indie effort over a bloated Hollywood bomb any day, and can get quite emotional over the merits of PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. B-movie and cult flick fans have a friend indeed in the Phantom!
