An Old Time Favorite, A Never Ending Classic

The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most popular stories of all times. Yet Andrew Lloyd Webber and Harold Prince captured the story on a different note. By combinding the haunting, mysterious side with the romantic side and a little bit of Broadway magic, phan just keep coming back for more and more. I saw the stage preformance with Sarah Lawrence and Gary Mauver as the Phantom and Christine at the Broward Center for Preforming Arts. They were amazing but when I finally bought the CD of Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, they were also amazing. Only problem is I wish there was more on the CD that just is. I guess I was hoping for the "full" preformance. Some people say that Sarah Brightman ruin the CD well in respect it was written for her and it was her time to sing it, mind you. But, yes, there were others that came a long way that transcended above her "but some can't hit the "E" in the tittle song right". I guess if you are properly trained "take it by me a singer" anyone can sing Phantom. Sarah took her singing career to another level thanks to Phantom and to me she sounds the same. The Phantom is the most loved character throughout the show. Even though the movie wasn't the same as the play, I thought the movie was good but I like the stage Phantom better because he shows a lot more emotion and rage than the movie "some part... sword fight was cool". The rest of cast played their parts respectively well. I think that this classic will continue to become a one of a kind treasure in American History. The music and the mystical wonderings of the Phantom of the Opera will leave you haunted forever.

    A reviewer

The music that has captured audiences from all around the world has hit on broadway 8,000 performances. This is a must see. I love the stage production better than the Movie. There was too much gold in the movie for the Masquerade scene. I mean Why can't they have different colors like they say in the song?. Aw well, but anyway. This is a must have. You must see it. Beautiful costumes, beuatiful characters. When I was little I had my eyes on the Phantom the whole entire time. I was not afraid of him. I loved him. But Christine ran off with Raoul in the End. My favorite songs are "Phantom of the Opera, Music of the Night, Point of No Return and All I Ask of You." Michael Crawford, fits the phantom really well. I love him too. I think we saw him back in 1994. I don't know but it sounded so much like him. Sarah Brightman is Married to the composer Andrew LLoyd Webber, and its like a true story, a composer loving a beautiful woman. Sarah's beautiful and he's a composer! *laughs* Anyway this is a must have, cd. If you don't believe me, just go see the play your self. Its a fantastic journey.

Phantom of The Opera - Original cast

Who doesn't like Phantom? It's wonderful, thrilling music, and I have it already but wanted to give it as a gift. I had a hard time finding the original cast recording in the stores, they mostly featured the movie version which is not as good. I checked 4 places online, and found the best price at Barnes & Noble, to my great surprise. And free shipping as well. I ordered it and it came in just a few days, making me very happy and my gift recipient happy as well.

    Phantastic!

This is a wonderful recording. I cannot stop listenting to it. I recently saw a travelling Broadway group perform Phantom and though it was very impressive, it was difficult to understand all that was being sung and spoken. This CD contains the complete text and score. It's like seeing it all over again.

    Unbelievable!

This is by far one of my families favorite soundtracks. Whether it's by the light of the candleabra poolside or the gentle rocking of the water sitting in the middle of the bay...the quiet solitude of the starry sky, the easy conversation of memories shared and the wonderful sound of this music in the air...makes for quite the magical evening!

The Brightest Star in the Sky

For those people who do not know, Andrew Llyod Webber wrote these songs for Sarah Brightman "then his wife". There is no one who sings them as well as she and there never be anyone who sings them that well. I recently saw the movie and was very disappointed with the quality of the vocals. Sarah is still the best there is even after these years.

Michael Crawford truely is the Angel of Music

I first fell in love with the 2004 movie, so I decied to get the orginal cast soundtrack. I love this CD! The music is beautiful and the cast is amazing! Sarah Brightman has such a pretty voice. She was an excellent Christine. Michael Crawford has the most amazing voice ever! It is so beautiful, enchanting, and magestic, you beleive that he actually is the Angel of Music. He just does so fabulously well as the Phantom. Every Phantom fan should get this CD!

    i love michael crawford

phantom is the best musical ever!!! michael crawford has the most beautiful voice i have ever heard! i love him! sarah brightman has a very pretty, operatic voice! she is fabulous. steve barton is better than any raoul i have ever seen. i liked the movie, but gerard butler sings falsetto, emmy rossum isn't operatic, and patrick wilson is okay, except for that whole sounding like a girl thing. this is the best cd ever! i've listened to is 74 times!

    Excellent!

I bought this purely out of curiosity, and I'm more than satisfied! My family's fallen in love with 'Phantom', and I look forward to getting the sheet music. I agree with whoever said Michael Crawford was the best, because he is!! He really surprised me with his vocal talent. I'd only heard him as Cornelius in 'Hello, Dolly!', and he had to hide his British accent for that. Gerard Butler did a great job in the movie, in spite of never having any vocal experience, but I still prefer Michael Crawford as the original Phantom.

    OK but Brightman ruined it...

It's a great musical, but Brightman shouldn't have been in it. I can't believe people actually think she is the only Christine, she's the best, blah, blah, blah. She sounds like a frog (or in the spirit of things, toad) and she would have done better as Carlotta. Other than that, Michael Crawford is great, but some of the songs don't really sound right with him singing them. Some of them don't sound right with him singing high notes. They just need lower, more powerful ones. Don't get me wrong, he's great. The rest of the cast is pretty good, just not the right people in the right part for some of them (cough, cough, Brightman). I'm not some "Gerard Butler is the only Phantom" phan because he definitely has some rough spots too. Four stars for a pretty good cast album.

    only because of brightman

I hate Sarah Brightman, she just has no ability to show emotion in her voice. But I love the rest of this cast. Even though I don't believe they are the best cast Phantom has had, this cast is much better then the movie with Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler. Frankly whoever told Gerard Butler he could carry a tune was deaf, the same goes for Rossum.

    Amazing!!

The original cast recording is simply the BEST!! Michael and Sarah make the listener envision the show and pull you in instantly. The movie pales in comparison...Emmy's voice isn't nearly as operatic or pure, nor is Raul's or the Phantom's. You just don't mess with a good thing and the original cast is by far and away greatest ever to perform the show. Who needs the movie when there's Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman??!!!

    Still magnificent.

After reviewing Phantom after a long absence, it amazing what comes to the ear. With the movie coming out, it has brought a lot of peoples attention to it again. I liked the movie itself, and Emmy Rossum has a sweet voice, but not the vocal range I think most Phan's expected. Sarah Brightman still rules as this C.D. can proof. I actually liked the movie Raouls voice better, which I admit suprised me. Gerard Butler acted and sang the part with a bit more harshness than M.C. though. Gerard Butlers voice sometimes came through slured and biting on the ears, while Michaels still comes through with pure clarity. Even without the visuals, his voice pulls you to actually invision it. Which is why Phantom is now the longest running on Broadway. Whichever version is prefered by people, it's the musicals underlying beauty that will always win over hearts.

    i agree with Kylie Bautista...

Yes, I do. I think that the lady who played Christine does sound like she has something on her tongue and or mouth. Emmy Robinson is much better. Emmy sounds more clear, she doesn’t jump words like the other does, she has a higher voice, and i think it’s prettier. Even though it’s not AS operatic, i think it's better. the Raoul in this isn’t the best. The Movie one is MUCH better. Though both Carrlotta's are GREAT. Even though Minie didn’t SING for her, she role was perfect. And so is the one in this too. Both Megs sound the same. So all in all, I like it. They got the phantom... he’s ok, but i like the movie better BUT THE MOVIE ONE IS MUCH BETTER. Give me flames, I don’t care. I have stated what I think, and that is that.

    Stunning

I have had a love for the phantom of the opera ever since I saw the trailer for the 2004 version and I have been hooked. The music and the way it is sung is by far the best out of all the musicals I have ever seen(4) I find myself huming the music all day long. This truly is a good CD worth your investment

The Original London Cast is the Best!!!!

When I first heard the cd I was delighted by Michael Crawford's voice, but when I heard Sarah Brightman's stunning voice I understood why Andrew Lloyd Webber fell in love with her. It is amazing the way she changes her voice during the the two acts in the play. In fact, for those of you who don't know, Andrew Lloyd Webber said that he wrote the music from The Phantom as a tribute to Sarah's magnificent voice. Some ignorant people don't even know that Andrew wrote The Music Of The Night not for the play but for Sarah's voice several years before he decided to produce The Phantom of The Opera. Thank you Sarah for your voice and for being Andrew's inspiration to write this fantastic music.Thank you Michael, for you are the best Phantom of all times. This Phantom of the Opera cd is a masterpiece.

The only person who gives the Original 4 stars... meaning the Original isn't the best!

Now I'm going to be perfectly honest with this review, just like I've been with my reviews for the 2004 movie soundtrack of the story! First off, this was the most recent cd I've bought of Phantom (first being the original Canadian cast, then the movie soundtracks, and now this) my reasons being... well first of all it's not what I thought it was gooing to be! Don't get me wrong, Michael Crawford is wonderful as the Phantom and he will always be known as the man brought the Phantom to life! Unfortunately, I can't say the same for Sarah Brightman's portrait of Christine, and yes I do know that the part was written for her... but I just feel that it wasn't the best role for her. And to be perfectly honest the reason this cd is geting 4 stars is because of Brightman, now I know that seems a little harsh, but come on people... am I the only one who thinks that she sounds like she has peanutbutter stuck on the roof of her mouth when she sings! Now that I think of it, when I first heard her sing 'Think of Me' I thought my cd player was warping on me, and then when I realized that it was really her singing... well I was shocked!!! She sounds better on some parts of the track than on others but I just can't get over the fact that she is the one who everyone is comparing to when it comes to the part of Christine, making it seem like she is the only one who could ever do this role! Truthfully, she sounds better now than when she did the original performance in 1986, I think she has one of the most powerful voices I've ever heard, but I just feel that Phantom wasn't her best effort. Everyone else in this cast was great with their roles... and so now I've finally gotten all of that off of my chest, I feel better knowing that I've shared MY OPINION with all of you who don't have the guts to critisize this cd!!!
