Delaney scores with Book One of the Phoenix Rebellion, "Revolution." Set in the near future, Delaney puts together an ensemble cast of characters and pits them against the Areth for the survival of the human race.
The Areth come from outer space and appear human. They've come to Earth and shared medical technology with us, but little else. A group of humans, "The Phoenix Rebellion," believe the Areth do not have peaceful intentions toward the human race. Covertly, a member of the Rebellion, Dr. Caitlin Montgomery, infiltrates the Areth's medical complex in New Mexico. Caitlin learns that an Areth scientist, Kathleen, gave birth to a half-human, half-Areth child, Michael. Michael's father is a human, Col. Nick Tanner. Caitlin finds Nick in Maine and shares the information with him. He's stunned. He thought his wife and son had died in childbirth. Without a second thought, Tanner joins the Rebellion, despite the fact that his feelings for Caitlin are complicated due to their previous affair which ended badly.
Delaney's writing is sharp. After a quick introduction to the Areth, Delaney jumps into the story. The plot flows well, never lingering. Delaney uses a good economy of words to paint descriptions. It's easy for the reader to visualize her futuristic world.
Delaney's characters are what makes this science fiction story shine. Col. Nick Tanner is a passionate man who has been hurt deeply in the past. Learning to trust Caitlin again is a struggle. Caitlin, for her part, realizes the folly of her youth, and tries to make up for it. The couple's chemistry is on a slow, smoldering burn that threatens to consume both when ignited. Victor's plight is heartbreaking, especially since he's an alien who shows Michael compassion. Michael's condition is intriguing. It's never fully explored in this book, leaving the reader wanting to discover more about him.
The story is "sophisticated" for romance readers. Delaney's love scenes are intense, yet tasteful. Book One: Revolution is a story packed with adventure, excitement, and love, making it a thrilling start to "The Phoenix Rebellion" series.

I love sci fi rom, but I'm a a hard sell. So often I end up with sci fi rom that is either too hard sci fi with not nearly enough romance, or a romance thrown in space just to get it under the sci fi genre. Finally, I found a book that gives me exactly what I want! Revolution is a living, breathing, vivid and all-too-possible glimpse into our future with characters I felt I knew personally. I love how the book isn't just about Nick and CJ... who are clearly the 'lovers' in this book... but it's about everyone. I wept when one of their friends ( I don't want to spoil you ) died. I cheered at the happy moments, and I held my breath waiting to know what happened next. And Michael... he's a mystery I want to see unfold.

The Phoenix Rebellion book 1~ Revolution, begins with an introduction to the Areth, and alien race which claims to be the true beginning of the human race. Friend or foe? It does not take long to learn that this Areth race, who look exactly like humans but are stronger and live much longer than their counterparts, are up to no good while making a pretence of serving the people of earth.
Mrs. Delaney creates a government in this future world of hers that is detailed and easily accepted by readers of our time.
The romance between CJ Montgomery and Nick Tanner is one that readers will immediately relate to, and become as emotionally involved with the outcome as the characters themselves.
A romance which ended abruptly eight years prior to the start of this story, and ended badly, picks up with Nick not trusting the woman he once loved more than life itself.
But CJ has a mission. She knows something that will change Nick's life, and regardless of her regrets and the pain it causes her to see the man she never stopped loving reject her, she presses on until he lets her have her say.
Together, along with the help of an underground organization called Phoenix, an elaborate, risky, plan is set to rescue Michael, the adult son Nick thought had died at birth.
Having lived through unbelievable cruelty, at the hands of his Areth mother, Michael is a fine man, worthy of the love, patience and care which Nick and CJ provide him as he acclimates to his new family, home, and life without fear or pain.
The cast of secondary characters give this book depth, feeling, and the readers know that as the series continues, they will be swept away by their stories every bit as much as they are with Nick and CJ's.
The Phoenix Rebellion Book One: Revolution is a thrilling futuristic romantic adventure that readers will not want to put down. The plot is tight, the characters three dimensional, moving the story along at a fast and exciting clip. Gail R. Delaney has a way with words which is smooth and powerful, telling her story in a way that puts the readers right there in the story, cheering for the good guys, and worrying about what the bad guys will do next!
Mrs. Delaney's futuristic world is flawless, entertaining, and I would not be surprised if this four book series becomes a movie someday.
