Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This second volume not only continues and updates the history of the photobook but also approaches the subject differently. Volume 1 approached the photobook from the curator/historian's perspective, emphasizing the subjective nature of photography; this volume is written from the photographer/editor's perspective. Photographer Parr, whose specialty is the study of the idiosyncrasies of mass culture and consumerism around the world, and critic and curator Badger (Collecting Photography) have drawn 750 color and black-and-white images illustrating our changing world and history from the covers and spreads of 200 photobooks. Their work encompasses primarily American, British, European, and Japanese photobooks but also briefly touches on the rest of the world. The contents include commercial photography, war photography, everyday life and social landscapes, and architecture. An essay on how photography and photobooks have influenced various photographers introduces each chapter. For those who follow photographic history, every major photographic genre, movement, and artist is included. To leaf through this book is to journey into the past; its images evoke our existence more poignantly than words can. Recommended for public, academic, special, and art libraries.
—Karen MacMurray
