Gr 2-4 The life and responsibilities of Mikhail Gorbachev, Soviet leader since March 1985, are briefly discussed in this simple picture biography. The black-and-white photographs are generally pertinent and of good quality. Unfortunately the book suffers from two major flaws: it will date rapidly, as it is written as though current events will continue forever, and the map of Russia and surrounding countries is incomplete, partially inaccurate and difficult to interpret. Even more of a problem, though, is the choice of Gorbachev as a subject for a biography for early elementary-grade students. In discussing him, it is necessary to use concepts such as socialism and communism, which are not defined in the text or the glossary. Ann W. Moore, Lane Road Library, Columbus, Ohio
