Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
That Pilates helps alleviate back pain is no recent discovery: Ever since the 1920s, practitioners have been noting its beneficial effects of this strengthening and stretching technique. But The Pilates Back Book is the first volume to highlight the pain-relieving properties of this well-tested system. And this book doesn't offer a one-size-fits-all program. West London Pilates specialist Witherington describes different regimens for specific types of pain.

The Previous Person dosent know what their talking about.

Back problems can come from a variety of sources. Neck injuries, neck mis-alignments,torn ligaments, improper posture, short leg, and the list goes on. Each back problem, is different than the next, and should be treated differently. There isnt a one-fix all!!! For me, the main cause of my back pain, was do to, tight glutes, and hamstrings. They were so tight, that it tightened up my back muscles(back pain), and virtually every other muscle in my body. The stretching outlined in this book, really helped to lossen up those muscles, and therefore lossen up my back muscles, and therefore help get rid of back pain. You dont need any medical studies, to show this, works. Its pure common sense. The muscles in the body are interconnected, and one set of tight muscles, are prone to tighten other muscles. The book has, helped me alot. Definately worth the buy.

    Show me the evidence!!

This book suggests you treat your back pain with Pilates stretching. Before you join the Pilates craze you need to ask yourself something, has it been shown to work or am I just making an author richer? If you ask your doctor how he or she knows that a medical treatment works they will say its through controlled trials. As an example, one group of back pain sufferers would do Pilates stretches while another group did none. If the Pilates group actually had less pain than the control group that had no treatment, than one could say that Pilates works. Herein lies the problem with this book. As a researcher, I searched huge medical databses such as Medline and the evidenced based Cochrane Collaboration (on-line) and found nary a controlled trial to support Pilates stretching for back pain. This means that there is virtually no medical proof that this book is effective. You probably wouldn't take a medication or undergo a surgery without it being shown to work in studies so why should back pain treatments be any different? Please save your time and hard earned money and invest it in treatments that have been shown to be effective for back pain in randomized controlled trials. A few books supported with RCT's I liked are: "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" and "The Relaxation Response."

This strengthens the back, neck and shoulders

Unlike Joe Shmoe above, I actually have been doing these exercises for a couple weeks now. I have shown some improvement with my lower back pain and will continue to follow the recommended exercises. My range of movement and overall health have increased. This book teaches you how to strengthen the back, neck and shoulders and thus will help reduce any pain associated in these areas. Take it from someone who has tried it, not just someone that looked at it.
