Overview

While still in his twenties, the Anglo-Irish playwright Martin McDonagh has filled houses in New York and London, been showered with the theatre world's most prestigious accolades, and electrified audiences with his cunningly crafted and outrageous tragicomedies. With echoes of Stoppard and Kafka, his latest drama, The Pillowman, is the viciously funny and seriously disturbing tale of a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a number of child-murders occurring in his town.

Editorial Reviews

Chicago Tribune
[McDonagh is] a dangerously prodigious master of theatrical form with a talent that goes far deeper than most people understand...THE PILLOWMAN [is] thoroughly startling and genuinely intimidating.
Financial Times
A complex tale about life and art, about fact and illusion, about politics, society, cruelty and creativity.
NY Times
Energizing...a blindingly bright black comedy...[what makes] the unsettling and exhilarating new play from Mr. McDonagh...so gripping as theater is how narrative art becomes the play's and the character's very life blood.
Variety
McDonagh's least forgiving, bravest play.

    Great Play!!

This Play is extremely well written and it has a lot of dark comedy in it. It is definetly a play you will not want to put down.

    I Also Recommend:

    Suspenseful!

This show is an amazing piece. Not only is the writing stimulating and leaves you in horror, but to work on and see a show like this sends you through an emotional rollercoaster that leaves you breathless. The only bad things I can say about this piece is that sometimes full conclusions are not drawn from the stories told by Katurian. But it will leave the reader pondering the message of the play and will spark brillant debate among friends.

    more from this reviewer

Wish I could see as well as read this

Katurian has written hundreds of stories but has only published one. That one, however, bears a striking resemblance to a child's murder. And as the police discover when they arrest Katurian, many of his unpublished stories, all gruesome and "downbeat," match the details of other, unsolved child murders. But Katurian seems to have no idea why he's even been arrested....

I'm still a little undecided about this play: it's blunt and intriguing but also dark and rather horrific. And I know there's a message about the nature and purpose of art in there somewhere, but I think I'm going to have to let the play sit and percolate for a little while before I can come to any solid conclusions about what that message is. This is the sort of play, I believe, that one almost needs to see interpreted on stage.

The latest from a disturbing master

This play probably has to be seen to be fully appreciated. The current NY production is about as immaculate as any one could imagine for this material. But even having seen it, there is still an added jolt in reading it afterward, if only to savor the superb writing. This play will be around for a long time. There are some aspects of its subject matter which are repellent, but overall it is a glorious play.
