Overview

I'm Pioneer Woman.

And I love to cook.

Once upon a time, I fell in love with a cowboy. A strapping, rugged, chaps-wearing cowboy. Then I married him, moved to his ranch, had his babies . . . and wound up loving it. Except the manure. Living in the country for more than fifteen years has taught me a handful of eternal truths: every new day is a blessing, every drop of rain is a gift . . . and nothing tastes more delicious than food you cook yourself.

The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Food from My Frontier is a mouthwatering collection of the simple-but-scrumptious recipes that rotate through my kitchen on a regular basis, including Perfect Pancakes, Cowgirl Quiche, Sloppy Joes, Italian Meatball Soup, White Chicken Enchiladas, and a spicy Carnitas Pizza that'll win you over for life. There are also some elegant offerings for more special occasions at your house: Osso Buco, Honey-Plum-Soy Chicken, and Rib-Eye Steak with an irresistible Onion-Blue Cheese Sauce. And the decadent assortment of desserts, including Blackberry Chip Ice Cream, Apple Dumplings, and Coffee Cream Cake, will make your heart go pitter-pat in the most wonderful way.

In addition to detailed step-by-step photographs, all the recipes in this book have one other important quality in common: They're guaranteed to make your kids, sweetheart, dinner guests, in-laws, friends, cousins, or resident cowboys smile, sigh, and beg for seconds. (And hug you and kiss you and be devoted to you for life.)

I hope you enjoy, devour, and love this book.

I sure did love making it for you.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Author, photographer, and Food Network host Drummond is one of food blogging's biggest success stories. Her blog has grown into a staggeringly popular lifestyle website (thepioneerwoman.com) that gets more than 20 million page views per month. Her second cookbook features the same layout and cast of characters as its New York Times best-selling companion. While it covers the same courses (starters, breakfast, lunch, supper, and dessert), it includes additional chapters for soups, pasta and pizza sides, and canning. VERDICT Readers who loved the first Pioneer Woman Cooks cookbook will love this second helping of hearty, crowd-pleasing recipes with step-by-step photos. Expect demand.
Kirkus Reviews
Bestselling cookbook author Drummond (The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels--A Love Story, 2011, etc.) returns with another compilation of mouthwatering recipes. The recipes are designed to "win friends, influence people, garner marriage proposals, foster friendships, mend fences, and make you the most popular person in town"--or to fill the comfort-food needs of the non–weight-watching crowd. The average cook will have no trouble duplicating these easy-to-follow recipes. Drummond's step-by-step instructions are illustrated with photographs at each stage in the recipe, leading readers from beginning to end. Covering all types of meals from breakfast, lunch and supper to party foods, beverages and desserts, many recipes are similar to what our mothers might have cooked before recipes became more health and calorie conscious. Familiar dishes such as ranch-style chicken, grilled cheese sandwiches and fancy macaroni and cheese will appeal to the reader's desire to cook hearty foods with a modicum of expertise, time and money being spent in the process. Drummond makes exotic-sounding dishes such as "Italian Meatball Soup," "Caprese Salad" and "Honey-Plum-Soy Chicken" as simple as frying an egg for breakfast. Interspersed with the recipes are more photographs of the author's life on her ranch. Some readers may delight in Drummond's down-home way of speaking directly to the reader, while others may find the interaction a bit snarky and annoying. A collection of basic recipes to guarantee a full belly and an empty plate.

    NOT WORTH IT!!!

It is hard to say if the appeal is that our world has gone so far away from the very most basic cooking skills or just that her blog has such devoted followers that they will buy anything she does a book signing for - even if every recipe can be found on her blog, free of charge. This woman is the most basic amateur imaginable. These recipes, as well as those in the first book, are things that anyone who had any direction at all in their mother's or grandmother's kitchen learned at a very young age. If you need a recipe for pico de gallo or if you need a picture of what measuring and adding a teapoon of salt looks like, then these are the books for you. I think people are confusing the enjoyment of viewing her photography online with her somehow being qualified to write cookbooks, but both Ree personally and her publisher have spent a great deal of marketing money to get her into and onto everything publicity-wise and boy is it working. My advice, however, is save your money. Open your momma's recipe box and you will find all of this and much more. Or, just go to her blog and print them off at no charge.

I love this cookbook! I've been following Ree's blog and getting her recipes via email and love how she demonstrates everything step by step. I was so excited to see her show on the Food Network and now I just purchased this cookbook. It's just like I was expecting from her- tons of photos of the recipes, little pictures here and there of her family but MOSTLY its good old home cookin' recipes. Any cook, beginner or expert, would sit down with this cookbook and read it cover to cover.

I purchased this cookbook for my Nook tablet. I love The Pioneer Woman's blog, tv show and I have her first cookbook. For the 1 star review, yes some recipes are basic and I can eyeball a teaspoon of salt, but I love Ree Drummond's style and how she can take the basics and turn it into something wonderful. Her enchilada sauce was almost identical to my grandmother and mother, but adding one of the ingredients made it even better! Her creamy mashed potatoes are now part of my Thanksgiving menu! I can't wait to try the recipes in this book.

I had waited. Anticipated. And excitedly awaited Ree's new book...only to be disappointed. Now, I admit. I love me some Pioneer Woman. I follow her blog and I follow her on Food Network. I think she's beautiful, smart and witty. Her recipes are awesome and she makes instructions plain and simple; the pictures are great, too. However, I was hoping for some new material. Much - if not all - of what is in the book I could hop on her food blog right now and print them - at no cost. Plus, I got this on my Nook Tablet, and I have to resize the page every time I want to read the ingredients. Had I known it wasn't exactly compatible, I'd have gotten the real book. I'll think twice before ordering any future books of hers, but I'll certainly continue to follow her blog and FN Show. And I'll keep enjoyin' those apple dumplings that are so addictive. Besides, I'm feeling just a tad bit burned she chose not to come to my state for a book signing. Just sayin'.

I love this cookbook. And I really have a lot of respect for Ree and her family. Her writings exude a positive attitude toward family and life and love. Just think what the world would be like if we all found the love of our lives, instead of marrying for all the wrong reasons-the world would be a much better place. Anyway, you won't regret buying this cookbook. It's a good one to add to your collection. And as to the naysayers and critics, I've noticed that any time anyone is happy or successful in life, there's always someone's who's bitter and critical of them. That's the yin and yang of life. Here's to you, who purchase or just read Ree's cookbooks and books- hoping that you catch some of her optimisim and joie de vivre!!
