Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Due to poor grades, Levi Viggers the Eighth is grounded for the entire school year and he must spend his time at the library in order to improvement his academic achievement. The worse part of Levi's situation is that his distant cousin, Bill Viggers the Fifth, is also serving library time after school. Bill has used several students, including Levi, as punching bags—hence his nickname, Big Fist. While trying to avoid Big Fist between the book stacks, Levi darts into the Local History room where his attention is attracted to the book, Our Town's History. He reads the weathered, handwritten pages that reveal stories about Levi Viggers the First, who was associated with the pirate, Jean Lafitte. Most enticing is the legend about Levi the First's buried treasure; the pirate loot begins the e-mail correspondence between Levi and his father who is stationed in Iraq. In response to Levi's e-mail inquiry about the treasure, Levi's dad reminds his son of the family treasure song passed down the generations from father to son. The young Levi Viggers have all looked for the rumored treasure. Now, the youngest Levi continues the Viggers' family treasure hunt; he must examine the clues in the song and overcome a variety of hurdles. The discussion questions and writing prompts at the end of the book include reflecting about relationships between the characters and about the development of the characters. The author provides a brief summary of Jean Lafitte, the pirate of Barataria Bay.
