Overview

Edgar Allan Poe's tales of terror, murder, and mystery are among the most celebrated in American literature. This carefully-chosen collection includes "The Gold Bug," "The Oval Portrait," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Cask of Amontillado," "Some Words With a Mummy," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue."

With striking illustrations and extended captions unique to the Whole Story, this collection provides background information for each story that modern readers could otherwise access only through a broad range of supplemental research--from details of the Spanish Inquisition in "The Pit and the Pendulum" to the Parisian detective milieu of "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." This distinctive approach places each of Poe's stories--all published in the mid-nineteenth century--within the context of their era, bringing them vividly to life.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Partridge
In this collection of seven stories by the master of morbid wit, the reader has a chance to see each story opened out into the context of the times in which it was written. Part of "The Whole Story" series, the pages are filled with very interesting facts related to details in Poe's text, and supplemented by well-reproduced prints, lithographs, and paintings. It's very well done. The stories, including the well-known "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Pit and the Pendulum" are intelligent, murderous and scary. For Poe fans, this will be a delicious dip into his chilling world. The glossy high quality of the pages and the fascinating historical tidbits make this a collector's book, and would please any young scholar with an inquiring mind and a love of the dark side. 1999 (orig.
Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-This series entry presents Poe's unabridged text accompanied by annotated color and black-and-white illustrations and reproductions of various aspects of life during the stories' time periods. The selections include "The Gold-Bug," "The Oval Portrait," "The Cask of Amontillado," "Some Words with a Mummy," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." In some instances, as when there is a historical connection, the annotations are particularly enlightening, e.g., the information about the Inquisition and its relationship to "The Pit and the Pendulum." To maintain continuity, readers may prefer to read through the stories first and then return to the sidebars or vice versa. Libraries that own anthologies of Poe tales will not be denying readers the most important material-the stories themselves-if they pass on this one.-Joanne K.
