All Music Guide - Stephen Eddins
The Plácido Domingo Story, a three-CD set that spans recordings from early in the tenor's career until 2010, will be a must-have for his fans. This expansive collection offers a chronological survey of Domingo's impressive career and allows the listener to map the development of his voice and the extensiveness of his repertoire and musical tastes. Few if any tenors of his generation excelled in such a diverse range of repertoire: Mozart, Italian bel canto, French grand opera, Verdi, Wagner, verismo, Spanish zarzuela, Strauss, Neapolitan song, and the work of living composers. The selections demonstrate the extraordinary power and colorful expressiveness of his distinctive voice. They are also evidence of his dramatic gifts in conveying with intensity each character's feelings, whether heroic, ardently romantic, anguished, carefree, or ecstatic. The first two discs are devoted to operatic excerpts, including both solos and ensembles, recorded between 1968 and 2007, and the third to selections from zarzuelas, sacred songs, tangos, and Italian and Neapolitan songs recorded between 1984 and 2010. The generously illustrated booklet that accompanies the CDs includes a detailed discography of the tenor's audio and video recordings for Decca or Deutsche Grammophon. It's far from comprehensive because of the number of important recordings Domingo made for other labels, but it's still a useful list in demonstrating the singer's versatility and remarkable vocal longevity. Hearing The Plácido Domingo Story, along with the four-disc set, Viva Domingo!, issued by EMI in 2011, the listener can get a full view of the extraordinary career of one of the great tenors active from the mid-20th century well into the 21st.
