Overview

Legendary adventurer Ashton Burke has roamed the globe for ten years trying to forget the spirited woman he left behind in England. His devil-may-care pursuits are interrupted, though, when he reluctantly agrees to retrieve his brother’s kidnapped fiancée from a sultan’s harem. Too late, he discovers his quarry is none other than Clarinda Cardew, the very same girl who made off with his jaded heart.

The last thing Clarinda wants is to be trapped in a palace of sensual delights with the man whose irresistible kisses still haunt her sleepless nights. She quickly realizes that allowing Ashton to rescue her may put her yearning heart in even greater peril. In a journey both tantalizing and treacherous, Ashton and Clarinda resume the impetuous steps of their dangerous dance only to discover the most seductive pleasure of all may be love itself.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Medeiros (The Devil Wears Plaid) conjures up a Victorian Orientalist fantasy of the Near East. In 1834, Clarinda Cardew is traveling from England to Burma to be married. When her ship is captured by pirates, Clarinda is sold to a Moroccan sultan. Her betrothed asks his “greedy soldier of fortune” brother, the devastatingly handsome Capt. Sir Ashton Burke, to rescue her, not knowing that Ashton and Clarinda have long been in love. In an entertaining twist, Ashton soon discovers that the sultan is his old classmate from Eton. Despite the sultan’s Western education, the imperial harem is highly sexualized: children are banned, nudity is routine, and cucumbers are carnal teaching tools. This ahistorical setting permits sensual shenanigans that reignite the flame between Ashton and Clarinda, even at the risk of death. A heavy reliance on the exoticized locale and stereotypical side characters diminishes an otherwise enjoyable story. Agent: Jane Rotrosen Agency. (Jan.)
Library Journal
Clarinda Cardew might have an adventurous streak, but even she draws the line at being abducted by corsairs while on her way to Burma to wed Maxmillian Burke, Earl of Dravenwood, and ending up in a sultan's harem, even as the sultan's favorite. But the man her fiancé hires to rescue her is his brother, Ashton Burke, who still haunts her dreams. Clarinda fears that escaping with him and spending that much time together will be far too tempting and much more dangerous than either of them can imagine. But with Clarinda and the sultan's wedding day looming, time is running out. VERDICT Overflowing with swift action, a lush, exotic setting, and plenty of hilarious, sometimes bawdy moments, this witty adventure takes a page from Valentino's The Sheikh to produce a seductive delight with an unexpected turn that readers will thoroughly enjoy. Medeiros (The Devil Wears Plaid) lives in Kentucky.

    MY THOUGHTS

    LOVED IT

Clarinda fell in love with the rogue next door and Ashton broke her heart when he promised to return to her once he had made his fortune. He never returned but his exploits found their way back to her ears. When his reckless way almost kill him, he must reach out to his estranged brother, Max who has comforted Clarinda previously and they become engaged even though she has never forgot about Ashton. Clarinda is on her way to Max when the ship is attacked and she captured, then sent on to a harem! Ashton is recruited to help rescue her by Max and he doesn't realize that this is that same girl he loved. Yes, you can imagine the the not so cute meet that takes place.

I adore Teresa Medieros' writing style and I am thrilled that she has written such a fun historical romance. You may know her from her paranormal romances, but her latest combines all of her strengths. Clarinda is a feisty heroine while Ashton is the perfect foil and she can give as good as she gets. Oh, the double entendre there! The best part of the story is that while improbable, in this world it all could happen and the author makes it so incredibly believable. Ash, ever the adventurer puts Clarinda through many trial rather than just hand her over to his brother. At times, I almost felt sorry for him since he is just so lost when it comes to where his heart should be. Thank you, Ms. Medieros, for taking me away for a few wonderful hours.

    Fun story

I really enjoy her stories and think its funny for those who said its not believable! Of course its not! Its a fictional historical romance novel! If you wanted to read something believable go find some non-fiction! This story is fun and yes unrealistic but that makes it intruiging! I cant wait for the next one! Also reccomend her vampire pair by her as well, good stories too (but beware they are a lil unrealistic too!) Lol

Another winner from the witty Ms. Medeiros!

After reading Goodnight Tweetheart by Ms. Medeiros, I knew I had to read MORE of her work. So, I jumped at the chance to read this book. This is one AWESOME read! Ms. Medeiros blends amazingly complex yet fun loving characters into a humorous, mysterious plot line and adds it to a historical romance story that will leave the reader in awe of not only her work, but her ability to transport the reader to the center of the Regency era and make them feel at home among the characters' lives. Set in a harlem, this story incorporates all the elements: kidnapping, romance, humor, mystery, happiness, sadness, anger and irresistible kisses from a hunk of a man. I loved the way this story played out. With laughs and love, and fighting for lives, this story hooked me instantly. Reading Clarinda and Ash's story was so much fun. Clarinda. I loved her character. She was a sweet, charming girl but she held a bit of a grudge against the handsome, dashing Ashton. He left her standing alone as he walked out of her life. But, she couldn't wait around for the unknown, so she moved on. Now engaged to his brother, she's been kidnapped and Max, Ashton's brother, is forced to do the one thing he shouldn't have to do. Enlist his brother Ash's help in retrieving his fiance. Ash's character was awesome. I felt the conflicting emotions he felt when he was indecisive over rescuing the only woman he's ever loved only to turn her over to his brother. I wanted to stand beside him and tell him that it would be okay, give him a big old hug and tell him to be merry. But, instead, I sat back and watched the events unfold as he tricked, and tried, and tested everyone until he found his way to the sweet, beautiful woman he would have to return to this brother. Both of these characters were awesome, and with some amazing secondary characters, like Poppy...bless her soul....Ms. Meideros keeps the reader on their toes with this wonderful romance novel. I definitely will be putting this 5 Book worthy novel on the shelf as a keeper and will go back to read it again, again, and again. I can't wait to read Max's story in the second installment of regency romance from this amazing, witty author! Great job, Ms. Medeiros! This review originated from Reviews By Molly in part with a blog tour.

    Not to Miss!

If you've read the other reviews, you already know the plot. I judge a book on if I can put it down or not. In this case, I absolutely had a hard time putting this book down. Story moved along wonderfully and ended with an explosive bang! Exotic locale, steamy scenes and characters who will stay with you. Run, do not walk, to buy this book! Looking forward to Max's book!

Pathetic effort from a good writer

Teresa Medeiros offers up a meager effort here with a hefty dose of titillation, thin plot and weak characters. There is no suspense as we know what will happen before it happens!
