I forced myself to read the entire book hoping it would get better. How a ranch wife becomes a gunslinger in so short a period of time is unbelievable. And not because she's a woman, it'd be true for anyone. I just kept hoping the story would develop into a real story. Even the title, The Poacher's Daughter, doesn't really fit with the narrative. At one point she runs into her crusty old pap who's been jailed for illegally killing bison in the newly created Yellowstone national Park. She pays his bail and that's the end of that story. I was hoping it would develop into something more like her chastising him for being a poacher. That his world was no longer valid. Nope. Just bailed him out and ended. A very slow read and very disappointing.

If you can read this and not like it then you don't like good western stories. It is one of the best he has written. One you'll always remember it makes you want to keep reading. You won't be sorry you got this one.
