INTRODUCTION

As an Englishman, as an Anglican, living in a country steeped in Christianity, it is amazing what I have forgotten or, perhaps, only half remember about my own religion. Our most basic assumptions about right and wrong, our calendar, our very language are all the product of centuries of Christian heritage. Our loveliest buildings, music and literature, our great institutions, our Parliament, even our Head of State are all emphatically Christian and yet it is astonishing what we miss or misunderstand.

Reminding myself of some things and clearing up or discovering others while compiling this book has been not only fascinating but genuinely enlightening. These are the beliefs, traditions, and words that have sustained some of the greatest engines for good in the world for centuries, and which inspired the noblest heroes and some of the blackest villains, and that still dictate the actions of millions.

What is a sacrament or station of the cross? Why 'Shrove' Tuesday or 'cardinal' sin? What were Protestants protesting about? When did the Pope become infallible? Who were Arius, Ignatius Loyola or George Fox?

Of course, in such a short book I may have neglected essentials and I am sure concentrated too long on things others may think trivial for which I apologise. But, by dividing the material into three main sections, a calendar and timeline, the 'When', a glossary, the 'What', and biographies 'the Who on Earth', I hope the information is easy to find and understand, and that looking up one entry will lead onto others.

Once these were matters of life and death. Some still are.
