This volume was released to coincide with the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth and was designed to address political aspects of his decisions and legacy. Finkelman (law & public policy, Albany Law Sch.) and Hershock (history, Univ. of Michigan, Dearborn), who have both written on the history of 19th-century America, here focus on prominent individuals in Lincoln's life, significant events, and social movements. The 275 signed entries range in length from one to seven pages and include a short bibliography of suggested readings. While the focus of the volume is on Lincoln's political nature, the actual coverage of that topic in each entry varies somewhat. The biographical entries in particular seem uneven in this regard. The topical entries are more focused on Lincoln's role in or influence on the event in question.
