It’s been quite a while since I read any young adult science fiction or fantasy. After reading “The Portal”, I think I’ve been missing out on some enjoyable reading. Richard Bowker has crafted an entertaining and captivating story about the adventures of two young boys from New England who travel to an alternate universe where some of the folks and surroundings are familiar but the times and events are totally different…and dangerous. Larry and Kevin, the two main characters, are faced with a complicated array of challenges as they struggle to find their way home. The story itself is exceptionally well done, but for me the best part of the book was how believable Larry’s and Kevin’s characters are. Based on the finely detailed descriptions he weaves into the young boys’ thoughts and actions, I suspect that Mr. Bowker either has a son near that age or he’s one of those rare people who never truly forget what it’s like to be young. “The Portal” was a marvelous read that’s suitable for readers of all ages. It took me back in time and reminded me why I fell in love with science fiction all those decades ago. In just a few more years, when my grandson is old enough, I’ll make a point to introduce him to Kevin, Larry and their adventures. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go have a bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. After that, I think I’m going out back to see if I can find a secret portal.

A Terrific Read! I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this. Would the promising story idea deflate once it got past the initial set-up, as so many other books do? It definitely did not, and stayed entertaining all the way through - I could not put it down. I have kids around the same age and I really felt for these boys - they're lost and are doing whatever they can to stay alive, stay together and hopefully get home. Glad the book was complete in itself, but it would be great to see them have more adventures like this. Overall, two very enthusiastic thumbs up!

I received a free copy of this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review. While walking in the woods one day, young Larry Barnes stumbles across an interesting anomaly. He found a portal that took him to what appeared to be a parallel universe. Everything looked similar to home, except that Burger King was called Burger Queen and Dairy Queen was called Dairy King. Excited about his discovery, he could not wait to tell his 12-year old friend, Kevin, about it and together they went to explore the portal. When they step through the portal this time, they find themselves in a completely different environment. And to make things even worse, somebody is shooting at them. When a family rescues them and takes them to Boston, they discover that this world is very different from their own and that the country is at war. As they go along, they make friends with several of the people and get involved in the war in ways they had never dreamed possible. The challenges continue to mount. Can they survive in this new world? Will they be able to get back home? Can they even find the portal again?

Enjoyable young adult book. Two twelve year old kids in an alternative universe during a war. I thought the dialogue used by Larry and Kevin was believable for their age. I actually liked it better than some other adult books that I've read recently.
