Overview

Time is running out for Mack MacAvoy and the Magnificent Twel—er—Seven! In just a few short days, the Pale Queen will emerge from her earthly prison to destroy the world.

But Mack and the Magnificent Twel—er—Seven are all but powerless against the Pale Queen and her evil daughter, Risky, unless they can assemble the other five Magnifica. The first step is to convince the evil traitor Valin to come over to the good side, a task that will force Mack to face his pogonophobia once and for all.

(What? You haven't heard of pogonophobia? It's a real thing, we swear. At least, it's a thing for Mack. A serious thing. You'll see.)

If they can convince Valin to switch sides and assemble the other four Magnifica, the Pale Queen won't stand a chance. It will all be over!

Maybe.

Mack's hilarious adventures continue in this fourth and final installment in Michael Grant's Magnificent 12 series.

Children's Literature - Magi Evans
Mack MacAvoy is the leader of the Magnificent 12, a group of twelve-year-olds from different countries who must work together to defeat the Pale Queen and her daughter, Princess Eriskigal. Both of the villains are monsters intent upon enslaving mankind and ruling the world. In this fourth and final book of the "Magnificent 12" series, Mack has assembled eight of the twelve and is running out of time to find the last four. Guided somewhat ineptly by Grimluk, an old man who is the only surviving member of the original Magnificent 12 group that imprisoned the Pale Queen, the group travels the world assembling the team. Meanwhile, the golem that was created to take Mack's place at home is having problems of its own. The author alternates chapters about the Magnificent 12, the golem, and Grimluk's history; the stories are tied together by improbable but hilarious and similar situations. Accompanied by Stefan, the fifteen-year-old former bully whose was saved by Mack and now protects him, the team must constantly fight all kinds of oddball, deadly foes and learn the Vargran language that will be their most potent weapon in the coming battle. While the threat of the Pale Queen and her minions is certainly frightening, the author's narrative is laugh-out-loud funny. Asides to the reader, puns, and zingers are abundant in both the main text and witty footnotes. Stefan's loyalty and the dedication of the twelve youngsters to the cause that could get them killed add just the right touch to balance out the mayhem and the hilarity. Grant does a good job of summarizing the first three books, but readers should read all the books so as not to miss any of the action or humor. This series is reminiscent of both Rick Riordan and Jon Scieszka. Reviewer: Magi Evans
