Overview

“No” is sometimes the hardest word to say. It’s also the most necessary.

How many times have you heard yourself saying yes to the wrong things—overwhelming requests, bad relationships, time-consuming obligations? How often have you wished you could summon the power to turn them down?

This lively, practical guide helps you take back that power—and shows that a well-placed No can not only save you time and trouble, it can save your life.

Drawing on their own stories as well as feedback from their readers and students, James Altucher and Claudia Azula Altucher clearly show that you have the right to say no:
To anything that is hurting you. To standards that no longer serve you. To people who drain you of your creativity and expression. To beliefs that are not true to the real you.

It’s one thing to say no, the authors explain. It’s another thing to have the Power of No. When you do, you will have a stronger sense of what is good for you and the people around you, and you will have a deeper understanding of who you are. And, ultimately, you’ll be freed to say a truly powerful “Yes” in your life—one that opens the door to opportunities, abundance, and love.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“James Altucher is scary smart.” — Stephen Dubner, author of Freakonomics

“What I like about James is you can tell he came from a roller coaster. He chose his own path to success without knowing the outcome. And . . . one thing is for sure: if you don’t make courageous choices for yourself, nobody else will.” — Dick Costolo, CEO of Twitter

“Every ‘no’ makes space for the perfect ‘yes.’ It’s impossible to thrive in an overcommitted world. And yet it’s so easy to get caught up—to drain our energy bank account, leaving us mentally, physically, and spiritually bankrupt. Your freedom may be closer than you think. The Power of No by James and Claudia Altucher is an invitation to a universe of meaningful opportunities on the other side of ‘no.’ I’m so grateful for this book and I know you will be too.” — Kris Carr, New York Times best-selling author of Crazy Sexy Kitchen

“The Power of No takes a fresh approach to becoming masterful at using ‘no’ to say ‘yes’ to life. Grounded in both practical and spiritual wisdom, James and Claudia take the reader on an unexpected journey that explores a variety of ways we prevent ourselves from being fully present in the here and now. Their book is filled with magic that can change your life if you’re brave enough to follow their lead!” — Cheryl Richardson, author of The Art of Extreme Self Care

“I would recommend this book to any member of the human species. It’s bold, empowering, and useful. It gave me the courage to turn down distractions so that I could focus on the important things in life, like endorsing this book.” — A. J. Jacobs, New York Times best-selling author of Drop Dead Healthy

I'm in the middle of reading this and enjoying it very much. I often have trouble saying no, resulting in many commitments that I simply dread. I also enjoy the authors' personal stories and how the power of no has helped them.

“No.” Is one tiny word that has a huge impact for everyone in every walk of life. In their book, The Power of No, James Altucher and Claudia Azula Altucher help readers to see how such a seemingly negative word can bring an abundance of positivity to your life. The book is broken down into James and Claudia’s seven levels of no and subsequent exercises that help you learn to master them so that you too can say no to the negative and yes to abundance in all facets of your life.  The title of this book is what drew me in. As a wife and a mother I find myself bending over backwards a ton for people.  Whether it be for my daughter, my husband, my parents, or my in-laws…I find myself sacrificing what I want and need all too often for the “better,” of others. What this book helped me realize is that while yes, I was doing good for others, I was not doing good for myself. It was a never-ending cycle of putting myself on hold and not being true to me.   Yes, I still make allowances for people, but I’ve learned that it’s important not to do it at the expense of myself. I really enjoyed this book, but felt while it made a lot of amazing points….it was too choppy in nature. I almost wish it would have had less information to cover, but expounded more on less. Nevertheless, I learned that in saying, “No,” more I was actually saying, “Yes,” to owning my truth and my power….and that’s a pretty wonderful thing.  I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review.

This book rates 5 stars for its important message about putting aside what we don't want in order to find the freedom to achieve and allow what we do want. It loses 3 stars for the lack of fact-checking, which is a distraction. Please note: The brain does not think. The mind does.
