Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

The Lorien Legacies continue. In I Am Number Four, the diabolical Mogadorians had tracked down and exterminated the writers of the newsletter They Walk Among Us; but now person or persons unknown are continuing to issue the newsletter, keeping readers updated on what is happened to John and the other Lorien Nine. Is this part of a devious Mogadorian plot or does it herald the beginning of a popular movement? (P.S. This Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition of The Power of Six contains an attached, removable eight-page issue of the newsletter.)

    Great book!

I loved the first book and I loved the movie. This book, did lived up to what I was waiting for and more. The reader this time see the other numbers. This book is told from Six's point of view, Four's and Seven's. The author also threw in some new changes, elements, and just Wow'ed me from the very first page.

So, Six. Did I mention how much I like this girl? The reader gets to get into the head of Six and see where she came from, who her guardian was, etc. I love that Six is strong and well adapted. Traveling along with Four and his best friend Sam, Six is a girl like no other. She fights, makes plans, maps, and goes to aid of Number Seven. Six doesn't let anyone slow her down. She knows what she needs to do and does it.

Seven. I loved this girl as well. Raised completely different, Seven is fighting a whole new battle of her own. She struggles with being bullied and ignored. I can't tell you how proud I was of her when she finally stood up to her guardian, for herself. I was like," YOU Go GIRL! Tell her how it is!" I was so hyped reading the book that I was jumping in my seat!

Four. Oh Boy, don't even get me started. More drama with Sara (UGH!) and Sam. I'm not going to get into everything cause I don't want to spoil, but just know that there is some major drama, unexpected twist that I was very ANGRY about. I mean seriously? I have no idea what will happened now, but its good drama that you will get into. All of the numbers are still fighting the aliens, traveling to and from places. Sam plays a bigger role than ever. I like that the reader learns more with what happened to his father.

The Power of Six definitely has power to captivate me into the reading the next book. Some parts of the story totally caught me off guard but nonetheless I enjoyed it. A well written fabulous book, it is a divine book that will capture readers everywhere!

A Spanish Convent, Love Triangles, and Lots of Aliens

The Power of Six is a strong follow-up to I Am Number Four (review here). The story picks up shortly after the last book ended, but it opens with a new member of the Garde (super-cool young aliens with special powers, only six known survivors of their race). Marina (Number Seven) and her Cepan (older protector alien, skilled in combat but without the special powers) have been hiding in a convent in Spain for a long time. Marina is now almost eighteen and skilled with the Legacies she has discovered so far. The problem is that her Cepan, Adelina, has dedicated her life to the Church and refuses to acknowledge what they are and what their mission is. With the help of an adorable new orphan named Ella, Marina plots to find the Chest containing her powerful inheritance- she wants to find the other five, before the Mogadorians find her!

The book is split back and forth between Marina's story and John's story. John, if you will recall, has run away from Paradise, Ohio with Six, Sam, and Bernie Kosar, leaving Sarah, the love of his life, behind. They are major fugitives, suspected of terrorist actions and hunted by the police as well as the Mogadorians. John is still holding on to the letter than his Cepan, Henri, wrote to him before he died, and he hasn't opened his Chest to explore his Inheritance yet. Meanwhile, both John and Sam have crushes on Six- which makes John feel guilty and Sam feel jealous.

Fortunately, relatively little time is spent on the love triangle(s) aspect. This book is action packed- the fight scenes are more frequent and even better than in the first book! The Garde have such cool powers, and in this book, they use them creatively. Marina, in particular, uses her powers skillfully. I remember reading I Am Number Four and wondering why John didn't use this or that power to do whatever, but in this book, he uses his powers in ways that I hadn't imagined, leaving me impressed with his innovative thinking. There's also a really cool part where John and Six use their powers to directly help humans by freaking out a bad guy. Sam also has special moments- he's NOT like Ron Weasley (mostly useless in combat until the very end). Despite being a human instead of an alien, Sam shows bravery, strength, and skill alongside John and Six.

The only downside was that the book was a little hard to get into- the first 50 pages or so set up the story for both John and Marina, which ends up being a lot of build up. After that, though, things start to get exciting... There are several cool twists- some in the beginning, and some near the end, and I LOVE twists that I didn't see coming! The last one hundred pages I couldn't put the book down, and I can't wait for #3! This book definitely ended on a cliffhanger, but the kind that makes you look forward to the next book, not the kind that makes you write an angry tweet and then delete it.

I would recommend this series to fans of YA Adventure. This is an alien story, which is kind of different, and it's a lot of fun to read. Yes, there's lots of violence, and yes, there's sad parts, but the writing gives you a positive, vibrant feeling, and the characters are good natured and warm. Both boys and girls will enjoy this book, and I think it transcends interest levels- this would be just as good to someone my age as to a fourteen year old.

    "Worth the wait"

Compelling, riveting, suspenseful. Those are the words I'll use to describe the stunning sequel to I am Number Four, the #1 New York Times Bestseller. If you've already devoured the first novel in the Lorien Legacies, I'm sure you can't wait to get your hands on this one.

But let me tell you, The Power of Six is worth the wait. Once you flip over the last page you won't be able to wait for the next one Pittacus Lore churns out.

The Power of Six takes off right where I am Number Four left off, although John Smith, Four, isn't the only narrator this time around. We get a glimpse of life through the eyes of another member of the Garde, Seven, also known as Marina. Marina just so happens to live on the other side of the world, in little old Spain with a Cepan very unlike Henri (John's Cepan).

Of course, life is tough for them both, and the remainder of the surviving Garde. But The Power of Six isn't just about running from danger, it's about betrayal, secrets, and hinting at larger things yet to be discovered in the remaining books in the Lorien Legacies.

One thing's for sure, The Power of Six won't disappoint. It will be all you've been expecting and more. Much more. The only downside? We'll have to wait another year for the next book!

A note for those of you who didn't know: The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore is the second in a planned six book series (dubbed The Lorien Legacies).

    Kind of disappointed

The book is in Number Seven's and Four's (John) perspective. While some parts were good, I was pretty disappointed. Half of the book, particularly the part about Number Seven, was mostly pointless in my opinion. When I thought of The Power of Six I was thinking all six of the kids and that's not what you get. Others are in it but they do not show up until the very end and it's really only five of them, not six as the title suggests. Not a terrible read but after I Am Number Four I expected something much better than what you see in The Power of Six.

    EXTREMELY recommended

this is probably one of the best books I've ever read. on average, I could read at LEAST 150 books, if only the books were as good as this one. I could not stop reading, I finished this book in 2 short days which kind of makes me mad because now I have to wait a whole year for the next one to come out!

    Great book, waiting for third

Picking up where #four left off Six is just as exciting. Both 4 and Six pick up another one of the kids left on earth. They both took a different path to save someone instead of working together, the result was jumping between two locations. Cannot wait for the next book

    A Must Read

My 13 year old can't put the book down. He keeps giving me a running commentary on what's happening. I can't wait to read it once he's done. Pittacus Lore has brought a welcome respite to the vampire drama. There are actually some teens that have zero interest reading about vampires and demons.

    Pittacus Lore

An amazing sequel. That's all I can say to this thrilling novel. It is full of drama, the testing of relationships, action, mystery, suspense, and a pinch of romance. This story unlike the first is told by the point of view of two of the brave Garde; John (4) and Marina (7). I'm telling you if you are anything like me this book will be done in 24 hours. But please take my advice and savor it. :)

    Must Read!

This second novel by Pittacus Lore was surprisingly even a little better than the original 'I Am Number Four'. I love the new characters added with all their personal internal and external conflicts. The powers their getting are better and more vast. Sure you still have your love conflict between the certain individuals but the war is almost here! The scifi part of this novel is getting more complex. Elders? special weapons? New legacies? Honestly I can't wait for Lorien Legacies #3! =]
