Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Della A. Yannuzzi
This title examines Abraham Lincoln's legacy and how the penny, though a small coin, became a symbol for a young nation. Author Redmond creates a story of how a penny can be a symbol of positive values and in the process shows the reader that the Lincoln penny is more than just a coin. For example, the word "Liberty" printed on the penny is a reminder of how our Founding Fathers worked for a free nation. The words, "In God We Trust," symbolize faith, and how the Founding Fathers used faith to create a unique country. The Latin words "E Pluribus Unum" mean "Out of Many, One." She interprets the "One" out of many to mean one can be like Honest Able and live the path of a hero. But the penny's largest feature is Abraham Lincoln's image, the sixteenth President, who is remembered for fighting against slavery and writing the Emancipation Proclamation. The author also includes a section called "The Penny Practice" where readers can learn how to develop Abraham Lincoln traits such as character, courage, honesty, and kindness. The last activity is to write a poem about the concept of the book. Illustrations are bold and colorful. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi

Adorable and Educational! There were many things about The Power

Adorable and Educational! There were many things about The Power Of The Penny that I liked, but what I loved about it was the enthusiastic way it tried to spark a love of history, social and personal responsibility, and an eye for understand our nation. The book is wonderfully written with a bouncy tone and a wealth of vibrantly engaging illustrations that bring this story to life, sparking imagination and education in children who read it. My son really got a kick out of learning about the penny through Abe Lincoln's effervescent words and I ended up learning a bit with him along the way. The book is a great choice for parents who want to educate their kids while entertaining them; it provides a well-rounded outlook on everything from the penny's history to the way it can be used to change your life and your world. It provided to be a smart reading choice for my son and I would definitely recommend it for parents and kids looking to learn and have a little fun as well.

A new way of looking at the penny for a new generation

I loved this book from the moment I saw it. The illustrations are just amazing and the words are beautiful. I am studying right now to be a teacher and can't wait to share this book with my students! I showed it to one of the directors in my program and they loved it too. It just does a great job of delivering the much needed messages of honesty and kindness to kids in a way they can understand and thats fun for them.

I also found the book stimulating for myself as an adult. The second half is full of activities and questions and I found myself remembering forgotten history facts, learning new things about the penny and taking a deeper look at myself and how I "practice the power of the penny."

Definitely a great read for kids, parents and teachers, and anyone else looking to be inspired! 2 thumbs up, way up!
