Description: This book is designed to bridge the gap between medical school pathology and residency-level pathology, providing an introduction to the many things that a first year will be expected to become competent at in a timely fashion. As examples, chapter 1 deals with using a microscope and chapter 2 covers descriptive terminology used by pathologists.
Purpose: As stated in the preface, the book is intended to address the difference between the way pathology is taught to medical students and the way residents must learn to practice. As someone who has just completed a post-sophomore fellowship in pathology, I would have found this book of great value 12 months ago.
Audience: This book is aimed at pathology residents in the early stages of the first year, and the author has done a great job of tailoring it to this audience. The author is an MD/PhD from Mt. Sinai's pathology department.
Features: The five introductory chapters cover using the scope, descriptive terminology, infection and inflammation, complex epithelium, and a chapter that I especially like, ditzels. This chapter deals with all the routine specimens, such as carotid plaques, which should not take but a few minutes to gross or analyze on the scope. The book then goes through topics organ-by-organ in the standard fashion. I appreciate the inclusion of some elements of grossing, such as a primer on margins and inking for some specimens. This is a somewhat comprehensive guide to what a first year resident should know about surgical pathology. First year residents who have a solid grasp of the content of this book by the end of the year would be off to great start.
Assessment: This book will have great value to an incoming first year resident. Of course, more comprehensive books such as Rosai and Ackerman's Surgical Pathology, 9th edition (Elsevier, 2004) will be invaluable to pathology residents of any level, but this one is a great starting point for a first year. It provides a very clear orientation to pathology of the various organs, orients readers to the microscope and descriptive terms, and gives a primer on immunostains. Since it is difficult to find a basic orientation to immunostains, I really appreciated this feature.
