Chapter One

Weekly Requests

"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

The following pages provide space to write down the names of people and situations and circumstances for which you want to pray regularly. We have provided a format that focuses on a different category each day, but don't be bound by that if you desire to pray for a group on a daily basis. As you use this journal, go back to those lists as often as you are led. If God gives you a Scripture to pray for someone, jot it next to his or her name.

Monday

Pray for Your Family

List the name of each member of your family. If you are married, include your spouse's family members. When there's a new addition to the family-a birth, marriage, adoption-add the name to the list. Every week entrust each one to the Lord, perhaps praying a promise from Scripture on his or her behalf (e.g., "Thank you that ______ is Your workmanship, created in You to do good works, which You have prepared in advance for _______ to do," Ephesians 2:10). Pray that God will bless, guide, keep, and use them, meet them at their point of need, and draw them ever one step closer to Jesus Christ. Thank the Lord for what He has done, is doing, and will do in their lives.

Tuesday

Pray for God's Family

Pray for the body of Christ. Start with the local body, your church. List the names of your church's pastor(s), ministry leaders (e.g., elders, deacons, Sunday school teachers, nursery workers), and their spouses and children for whom you feel compelled to pray. List other members of your church for whom you have committed to pray. Add to the list the missionaries you support. Pray that the gospel is proclaimed "as of first importance" (see 1 Corinthians 15:1-11). Pray that the Lord will bless, guide, keep, and use each one, and for any specific needs. Pray for nationally known Christian leaders, parachurch ministries and their leadership, all lay-workers seeking to be "salt and light" in their communities. "Keep on praying for all the saints" (Ephesians 6:18)!

Pray for Your Community

"Who is my neighbor?" someone once asked Jesus. The Lord responded with the Parable of the Good Samaritan (see Luke 10:25-37). The essence of this parable is, "What happens to you matters to me." This should guide our prayers for people in our communities-those we live near, work with, bump into at school, see at the mall, and so forth. List the names of people in the various communities in which you are an "insider." Pray that the Lord will meet each one at his or her point of need, both physical and spiritual, according to His will. May each one know the truth of John 10:10, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

Thursday

Pray for Your Nation

A most fitting prayer to pray on behalf of the nation is to adapt the Lord's words in 2 Chronicles 7:14, that His people, who are called by His name, will humble themselves and pray and seek His face and turn from their wicked ways-then He will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land. Pray for the revival of God's people in the nation, that they will be "Jesus in jeans" to the people in their communities, being used of God to lead others ever one step closer to Him. Ask God's forgiveness for the nation's sins of pride, prejudice, insensitivity to the needs and hurts of others. List local and national spiritual and political leaders and pray for each. List and pray about current national issues.

Friday Pray for the World

Pray for a worldwide outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and thus a vibrant body of Christ being used of God to help people "to know Christ and to make Him known." Pray that revived believers would reach out and touch people for Christ, meeting their physical and spiritual needs, as Jesus' early church followers did (see Acts 3:1-10), and that they would respond with His love, grace, compassion, and wisdom to social struggles (add to your prayer list needs you are aware of). Pray for the nations of the 10/40 Window, which extends from West Africa to East Asia and is home to the world's neediest people, least evangelized nations, and major world religions. Pray for the persecuted church. Finally, pray for the advance of the gospel everywhere (see Matthew 24:14).

Saturday

Pray for the Helpless, Hopeless, Hurting, and Lost

Start with the world, draw closer to your nation, closer to your state, and closer still to your own community-and list the names of and pray for the physically and spiritually afflicted. Pray that the Lord would use believers, including you and your family, to help meet the needs of "the least of these," all who are hungry, thirsty, strangers, in need of clothes, sick, and in prison (see Matthew 25:31-46). Find out what needs exist in your community and how your church and local parachurch ministries are helping to meet those needs. List and pray for their efforts. While "every need isn't a call," some needs are. Ask God how He would want you to help.

Sunday

Pray for Personal Guidance

"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize," said the apostle Paul (1 Corinthians 9:24). Pray that God would help you to run for the prize in every area of your personal life. List specific prayer requests for His guidance in these five key areas: personal, family, work/school, church, and community. Personalize Romans 12:1-2. Thank God for all that He has done, is doing, and will do (because He has promised!) on your behalf, such as helping you to become more and more like Jesus every day (see Philippians 1:6, Romans 8:28-29). Pray that on a daily, moment-by-moment basis you would know His presence and live in such a way as to please Him.
