Editorial Reviews

"The Principles of Beautiful Web Design is a good book to kick start your graphic-design journey. The biggest benefit that I got from this book is the knowledge to learn from great designs as opposed to just admiring them in a state of awe." - Slashdot.org

"Jason is a great writer, and the book is quite easy to read. It's put together wonderfully, including many full color screenshots and other forms of imagery that make the book a pleasure to read. I'd definitely recommend the book to anyone in Web design." - MondayByNoon

"Jason Beaird covers web design in a way that non-designers can understand. He walks you through all of the aspects of design development from initial meeting to finished product. If you are just getting into web development, this is a must read." - Blogcritics.org

"This is a thoroughly practical guide to web design that is very well written: good technical depth in easy-to-understand language with excellent illustrations and graphics that support the text. For many users it will be the only web-design text they will need. For those who want to further advance their skills and knowledge it will provide a sound foundation." - PC Update

"His "Don't just tell, show!" style makes this book accessible to everyone... It strikes a carefully thought-out balance between describing principles and illustrating them. It is clear and well structured, with practical examples in every chapter." - Mitch Wheat

You're never too old or too young to make web sites that suck less

One part of my life is working as a professional programmer for twenty years in different environments: from culturally conservative financial institutions to small media firms that try to be edgy. As a software developer I seek advice from the artists who have Photoshop and related skills. But every time I work on a web site, I wonder if I can't make a web site look a bit better myself. Recently I picked up the "Principles of Beautiful Web Design" and I have spent a lot of time with this book. The chapters tell the story: Layout, Color, Texture, Typography and Imagery. Applying the principles in this book will help you re-think how to create web sites, rather than providing a how-to approach. We know about colors, type families, CSS and images, but applying these techniques so that the web site projects the right image and feels right is a journey that takes several iterations. With all the professionally created Comps and Wireframes, and fully debugged and tested server side code, the end product may still suck. That's why it is so great to have Jason's book at hand and ask yourself: how is the layout helping the customer, does the color send the right message, is the typeface readable and does it guide the eye to what matters most, and do the visual elements enhance the browsing experience. In other words, it is an iterative process of refinement. CSS, Ajax, Flash and Silverlight make a better visual web experience possible than a few years ago. Jason's book guides us on that quest in a very attractive manner.
