Description: This comprehensive review of the profession of dietetics details the history of the profession, what the profession entails, steps for becoming an RD or DTR, as well as insight into the future of dietetics.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a clear and up-to-date picture of the profession of dietetics in order to properly inform students interested in this field. These are indeed worthy objectives. This book is a comprehensive tool for interested students to assess whether or not a career in dietetics would be a good fit for them. I am currently a dietetic intern with eight weeks to go until completion of the program. If I had read this book prior to admission to the program, I may have felt more equipped entering the field, both as a student and as a dietetic intern.
Audience: According to the author, this book is written for students interested in finding out more about the profession of dietetics. It also could be of interest to those in other professions interested in what the field of dietetics entails. The book discusses the various areas dietetics professionals may work in (hospitals, schools, community programs, health clubs, and foodservice), but it does not go into detail, so it does not target any particular area.
Features: This book discusses the profession of dietetics in general, including how it began, details of the profession including the importance of a team approach, the education, supervised practice, and credentialing necessary to enter the field, information on the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and other professional organizations, and how to prepare for entering the field after formal education and training. I found part III, which covers how to prepare to enter the field of dietetics, the most helpful. This field offers so many pathways to obtain credentials, which may be confusing to many. This book clearly delineates the various pathways one may follow in order to obtain a dietetic credential.
Assessment: This book offers a comprehensive review of the profession of dietetics and will be very useful for prospective students interested in this field. Aside from prospective students, it may also be useful for those in other professions interested in gaining insight into the dietetics, as well as current students interested in bridging the gap between student and professional. This update is necessary because the profession of dietetics is constantly evolving in areas such as salary range, the pathway to becoming an RD or DTR, ways to apply to various supervised practices, the credentialing process, etc.
