Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
As major cities turn to ecological solutions to address problems such as stormwater overload and urban heat island effect, green roofs are becoming mainstream. This comprehensive manual gives architects, designers, and property owners imaginative, practical guidance in understanding the process of creating a green roof and successfully seeing it through. The book explains the huge range of disciplines that green roof designers need to consult and integrate, from the inspiration of fine art, architecture, interior design, and ecology to the technical expertise of engineers, roof specialists, landscape designers, and horticulturalists. The book is lush with photographs of projects by an international selection of designers, including beautiful and whimsical work such as the wild orchid meadow on the roof of Seewasserwerk Moos in Wollishofen, Switzerland, and Benjamin's own Joseph Cornell-like "bug hotel," a wall panel designed to provide habitat for cavity nesting bees, beetles, and spiders. The expert advice of Dakin and Benjamin, both cutting-edge green roof designers, is interspersed with interviews with others in the field, and the book concludes with a "virtual round table" of major figures in the field discussing key issues and future prospects. 166 color photos.

Garden Design Online

From the Publisher
"Nothing's been left out in this book...it's one that every designer needs."
Library Journal
Landscape designers Dakin and Lisa Lee Benjamin and writer Mindy Pantiel (Kids, Teachers, and Computers) present a beautiful collection of successful green roof projects. Interviews with designers of these roofs examine their creative processes. Planning and development details tie into requirements for LEED certification. VERDICT Most of these case studies feature large commercial and urban installations. Although photos of beautiful green roof designs are provided, this work is aimed primarily at professionals. The general reader may come away inspired but lacking the information needed for smaller DIY application. Those looking for information about installing green roofs at home may find Edmund C. Snodgrass's Small Green Roofs more applicable. Still, this lovely study is recommended.

Meet the Author

Lisa Lee Benjamin creates and nurtures large landscapes that unite people, art, and science. The portfolio of Evo Catalyst, her San Francisco-based design consultancy, is filled with sustainable solutions for diverse animal and human habitats. These include green roofs, hedgerows, wetlands, food and forest systems, and stylish gardens for residential and commercial use. Lisa thrives on collaboration with artists, scientists, and specialists as exemplified by her design of the unique habitat parapet at the Heron's Head EcoCenter. She is a founding member of Alpine Initiatives, Urban Hedgerow, Growwest, and the Bay area's Green Roof Alliance.

Karla Dakin specializes in artful, environmentally bold landscape architecture with an array of international projects. Shaped by a career in the national art world, her work continually references art. Plant-obsessed, Karla uses vegetation in forward-thinking ways, as exemplified by her roof garden for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver. This passion for art and design leads to an intriguing twist in her collaborative designs. Her enthusiasm for green roofs led her to be a founding member of Growwest and an active member of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.

Mindy Pantiel has been writing about architecture, interior design, and gardens and landscapes for three decades. Her articles have appeared in Metropolitan Home, Western Interiors and Design, Better Homes and Gardens, Garden Design, Garden Ideas and Outdoor Living, Garden, Deck and Landscape, Traditional Home, Luxe Interiors and Design, and Connecticut Cottages and Gardens, to name a few. She helped launch and served as editor of the magazine My House in the Mountain States, and is author of several books on computers and architectural trimwork.
